Meet Trailblazer Sydney Borchman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Borchman.

Sydney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was in high school, I was always the person people came to as their “suedo therapist”. I realized I enjoyed it and had a natural gift to be emotional support for others. So, studied psychology at WVU and then got a masters in social work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. After entering the field as an off-site mental health therapist, I felt like something was off. I was in the right realm but felt that I wasn’t doing the exact work I was meant to be doing. I then decided to begin my quest of blending my passion for fitness and my education in mental health and creating a life coaching program that focuses on helping a woman obtain a body they are proud of while simultaneously stepping into the confident woman they deserve to be.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely requires discipline, persistence, and unshakable belief in myself. I have struggled with being scared of stepping out of my comfort zone with certain things, moments of doubt, and fear of what others could think. I try to remember certain things: 1) if other people can do amazing things and create the life they want- why can’t I? 2) there are people right now, less qualified than me, doing what I want to do because they believed in themselves. 3) create that first, messy version. Just start.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
So! I am a personal trainer with a background in mental health and wellness. What I offer women is workout programs on my app custom made to their goals. I also give nutritional guidance and accountability based on the client’s goals. The package really is unique in because it also includes weekly one-on-one Zoom coaching calls. This gives myself and the client the time to really get into the clients progress, work through any hurdles the client may be dealing with in their fitness journey, and additionally gives the client and I the time for me to really help the client work through any mindsets/beliefs that could be holding them back not only an athlete but in their everyday life. I really want to coach women in achieving things in their personal lives in addition to their fitness goals. I believe, if someone can achieve a strong body that they once never believed to be possible- well then what else can they prove to themselves to be possible?

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think you really have to focus in on what it is you want, and then search for someone who has successfully created something very similar to what you want- because they likely have the road map or can point you in the direction of a road map. For example, I currently am in a mastermind business course specifically for women who want to become health coaches. My coach has made 7-figures as a health coach, and the proof is in the pudding. She has helped me so much, especially with the areas I lack knowledge in (like marketing and business). I say if you’re serious, invest in the right mentor or coach.
