Meet Trailblazer Tiffany Alblinger & Kelly Pappas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Alblinger & Kelly Pappas.

Tiffany & Kelly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After experiencing birth first-hand with our own babies in 2010, we both knew working with families in this capacity was a must. We both worked as labor-support doulas in hospitals, birth centers, and homes for many years before discovering our true passion. Seeing women give birth at home, in the comfort of their own space and confidence of their trained midwifery team made us want to participate in the clinic aspect so much more. We both attended and graduated midwifery school, and teamed up to start our own practice together in 2018 after passing our board exams. A sweet mix of meaningful personal experiences and a fierce love for community brought us together in partnership as Licensed Midwives in North County San Diego.

Has it been a smooth road?
Arriving at the milestone of having our own business was thrilling. We weren’t midwifery apprentices anymore, we had command of our schedules and policies and business procedures, and had a lot of fun dreaming up the creative aspects of our brand. However, the level of responsibility was daunting at first. Where do you file paperwork, how do corporate taxes work, what do we need to practice in compliance with our medical licenses, etc. We also were adamant about not going into debt. We self-funded all our start-up costs but still, it cost more than we calculated. While navigating the challenges we reminded ourselves of the long-term goals we had: to build a business that was sustainable. To us, this meant going slow on some things when it all feels like a race, being conservative with our resources, and making huge efforts towards getting the right amount of support around us.

We’d love to hear more about Beautiful One Midwifery.
We provide midwifery care to women of all ages. From puberty to menopause, we offer routine office exams, gynecological care, preconception counseling, prenatal care, homebirth services, postpartum care, breastfeeding help, and women’s health consultations. We are passionate about helping women connect to the holistic nature of their beings and provide care that addresses women as a whole. We pay attention to the medical and physical but also the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of health too. As midwives, we have a unique knowledge of alternative and effect treatment options for common women’s health complaints that do not include medications or surgical procedures. We believe so deeply in women being the backbone of community health that we provide well-woman exams for free, consult with women over their various issues for free, and include a full year of postpartum care in our homebirth services,

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The biggest barriers to more women becoming midwives is the lack of leadership for sustainability. Most midwives are solo business owners and on-call 24/7 for their private clients. There is a large burn-out rate among us for lack of community support, sustainability education, awareness and collaboration with eachother. Madeline Murray of Believe in Midwifery is doing the big work of bring awareness and supporting is nationally. Midwives have excellent outcome statistics for less trauma, cesareans, illness, and death than their hospital-based providers, especially for at-risk populations like women of color who are 3 times more likely to die in childbirth in the US than white women. We desperately need more midwives in this country; and we need clearer and more supported pathways to education and sustainable practices.
