Meet Trailblazer Yelyzaveta Hyzhko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yelyzaveta Hyzhko.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in Ukraine, I’ve always wanted to be a dancer. I’ve been dancing since I was 6, participated in many competitions locally and internationally. At the age of 18, I moved to the US to find more career opportunities. I partnered with someone and, during that partnership, discovered social dancing. Through my social dancing, I made many friends and also started to feel an imbalance in my partnership. Gaining confidence through my new circle, I made a clean break and started working on my own projects. I eventually found a new partner who I felt treated my work fairly, encouraged me and believed in me. Now, I feel stronger than ever and am realizing my dream.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of my main struggles was my previous partnership. Because I felt obligated to him for his help, it made it difficult for me to speak up. Over time, it became more obvious that we were walking on different paths. Through my new network of supporters that I met social dancing, I was encouraged to leave. They kept telling me to respect myself, my time, and my experience.

The advice I would give to other women in their journey would be to not doubt yourself and surround yourself with the right people. I’d also tell them to stay hungry and humble.

Please tell us about INDIGO Dance Company – what should we know?
I am a professional dancer with many specializations including ballroom, Latin and social dancing. On the dance floor, I’m known for my styling, body control, and visual aesthetic. In the classroom, I’m known for my patient teaching style and helping others find confidence. I’m also known for my high energy and being a fun social dance partner.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
At first, I would definitely mention my mom and grandma. They are extremely wise, hardworking and humble women. They made a huge impact on raising me and giving me strong believes in my power.

I also cannot forget all my female dance instructors and teachers, in general. They have been teaching me, discipline, and ways to express myself through my career.
