Today we’d like to introduce you to Trenell Foster.
Trenell, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Trenell Foster. I started in the entertainment industry in 1997 writing music and I started releasing music and directing music videos under the name Jamez Flamez after I got out of the Army in 2001. Shortly after, I got into internet television/radio directing and co-producing a show called New City Radio on dagosd.com. The show ran for three seasons and was one of the top-rated shows on that station. Feeling that I wanted to expand in the industry and having a love of films, I got into scriptwriting and directing films and web series. Currently, I have a few productions I’m working on.
One is a web series called Day Walkers and Static Discharged which is a fan film for Static Shock. I have several other films and projects in the works like Static Recharged and Static Shock, the sequels to the fan film Static Discharged. Ravaged, Thanatos and 9 Lives which is a horror trilogy as well as a few more. I’m also into comic book creation and in working on my own comic productions based on some of the short films, I’m working on.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely been a rough one as I learn more of the ins and outs of the industry. Thankfully I have a mentor that has been very helpful and making things run a bit smoother for me. I also have books on film making and the dos and don’ts of the industry. I would say the biggest struggle for me has been locations for shooting and getting the actor’s schedules together for filming.
Please tell us about Black Monolith Films.
Black Monolith Films is a San Diego based film company. Currently, I am owner and founder of the company and I also write the scripts for the productions along with Jeremy Stokes. I also have a couple of cameramen I rotate in and out based on availability. What I’m most proud of is the fact that I have been able to write a good amount of projects that have allowed me to be able to write for other people’s productions as well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think I’ve been very lucky due to my prior connections in the past as a recording artist and internet show host. I’ve been very fortunate to find good actors to cast in my projects and that they all like the storylines of the films that I’ve written.
