Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinity Hankins
Hi Trinity , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all stemmed from my love of working with kids. Ever since I was a kid, I was obsessed with babies. My mom was a birth doula, so I was constantly hearing about birth and babies. I think that’s what really peaked my interest. Being the youngest, I didn’t have any younger siblings to watch, but I was desperate to. I begged my mom to let me start babysitting at 12 years old, and she did! Family friends would allow me to watch kiddos for a few hours while they snuck away for a date night. I fell in love with childcare at that age. I babysat more and more as I got older, and was ecstatic when I passed my driver’s test because I then could babysit more. At that point, my goal was to become an infant nanny, and I landed my first infant nanny job at 18. Fast forward fours year. I was an infant nanny for a different family, and was watching them struggle with the baby’s sleep, which in turn disrupted theirs. Naps were being skipped, bedtime was rough, and there were a handful of overnight wakings. This was not a new scenario to me, in fact, it was one I was very used to seeing. I remember thinking “There has to be a solution to this, there’s no way families are supposed to struggle for the first few years,”. Honestly, the thought of being a parent myself in that situation terrified me. So, I began to research. Clearly, there was a need, and I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help families actually get some good sleep. I stumbled upon the sleep consultant career path and it immediately got my attention. I became fascinated by what a sleep consultant did, and it became apparent that was how I could fill the gap. I enrolled into CPSM, took the course, and started my business!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m still starting out, but no, it has not been very smooth from the start. It took a few months for me to even enroll in the course and get my certification. I had to pray about it a lot with my husband, and the timing didn’t ever seem to be right. I finally felt peace to start, and so I did. I’m still figuring out how to market myself the best, and am figuring out all the kinks when it comes to running a business properly. I know there’s a long road ahead of me, but I also know helping families sleep again will make it worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a certified pediatric sleep consultant. My goal is to help families sleep through coaching parents on how to sleep train their little ones. I take clients as young as 3 months, as long as they have the go ahead from their pediatrician, and as old as 5 years old. I believe that my experience in childcare has allowed me to see many different environments, personalities, and behaviors first hand, which is crucial to understand while sleep training. Sleep training is personalized to each kiddo and their needs. It is never a one-size-fits-all situation. Being a birth doula has also taught me how to advocate for my clients without attaching my own prerogative to it. I believe this is important for sleep training also. Understanding every parent has different preferences while advocating for the training needed is a huge tool.
I offer a few different packages. My main one, and most popular, is the two week support package. Simply put, I will create a personalized sleep plan for the kiddo, and will coach the parents through it for two weeks.
Delightful Dreamers is similar to my doula business name, Delightful Births. I didn’t want to combine my practices, but I wanted them to be related. My goal is to always offer my services to my doula clients, and I figured it would be easier if the names were related.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is that families get good sleep. If the parents aren’t sleeping well for days, weeks, or months on end, then taking care of their little one is 10x harder, and it isn’t healthy for them. If the baby isn’t sleeping well, they get overtired, cranky, sleep becomes worse due to being overtired, and then the parents are suffering. It’s a vicious cycle. I never want a family to feel like they will never be able to sleep, like they’re stuck, or something is wrong with their baby. My goal is to empower families and coach them on how to experience healthy sleep.
