Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Lewellyn.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in New Hampshire. I knew a desk job would never work for me, nor did I really have any desire to devote my life to a mundane 9-5. I have always been fascinated by art and music, Sketching and drawing have been a part of my daily life for as long as I can remember. I knew my only chance at happiness was to find a way to make a career out of it. In my early twenties I began traveling around the country in search of artistic opportunities. I honed my artistic abilities while working in kitchens to make ends meet amidst my travels. The first time I came to San Diego I immediately felt like I was in the right place. Eventually I ended up settling here in hopes of finding a job as a tattooed. After about 7 years of hard work I finally impressed the right people with my skill set and began a formal apprenticeship at Funhouse Tattoo in pacific beach.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is my life. It’s in my blood. It consumes my thoughts. My blessing, and sometimes my curse. It was never an option for me. I am a firm believer that we are all capable of living our dreams. From an early age I rejected any form of “normal” career path. There has never been any question in my mind that I am here to do this. I like making meticulously detailed work. My two mediums are tattooing and watercolor. Watercolor is strictly to fulfill my personal visions. Tattooing is more of a collaborative approach between artist and client. Both are unique and equally fulfilling. I love the satisfaction I get when I get to see the final result of my efforts, or the look on a client’s face after they look at their new tattoo for the first time. There is simply no comparison.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Don’t give up. Persistence is definitely key. In this industry you will be rejected, laughed at, and criticized beyond belief. Thick skin is a must. Treat it like a job until it is one. Set aside time every day to work on your art. Sacrifice. Relationships, partying, and sleep may suffer. You must look at it as an investment in yourself. If you don’t take yourself seriously, nobody else will either. Ultimately there is no substitute for old fashioned HARD WORK.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The single best way is to come into the tattoo studio. Talk with us. Bring your ideas. Collaborate with us. Check out the atmosphere. Let us turn your vision into reality. We take great pride in what we do.
