Today we’d like to introduce you to The Undertaking!.
The Undertaking!, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Getting introduced to the bands like Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, The Chariot, P.O.D. in our early high school years completely changed the perception of what music could be. As most young, aspiring punks do, we were all in a bunch of random garage bands in high school and early college (shout out to xHope at Half Mastx). None stuck and when the time came to graduate college, get a career and start a family, music was, unfortunately, the thing that had to give. Fast forward 15 years… careers, life, families… that pre-mid-life crisis yearning hit. After hollering at a couple of old bandmates and gauging interest, The Undertaking! was back in business.
The Undertaking! started making music in 2018. Joined together by our love of hardcore music, band members Keith (guitar), Johnny (guitar, vocals), Brent (drums), James (bass), and myself (Austin) jumped into the studio to record our debut EP ‘Scavengers’ in the Fall of 2018, with producer Daniel Bourget. The EP was released in April of 2019 and we hit the ground running, bringing our energetic live show all over SoCal venues, making a dent in the San Diego hardcore scene. Most recently, we shared the stage with Earth Groans (Solid State Records), and Comrades (Facedown Records), on behalf of the San Diego venue, Brick by Brick.
We just released our new single, ‘About Ghosts’. The lyrics are about someone doing something stupid to you, and you realize you’re wasting space in your brain by thinking about it over and over. Don’t waste time worrying about stupid people doing stupid things. The new single was mastered by Joey Bradford (of The Used), and the artwork was made by illustrator Dave Quiggle. The song has been in rotation in the live set for some time, and we think it’s a clear representation of what we try to bring as far as an explosive live energy.
And there you have it! If you were come to Brick by Brick on December 15, you would see The Undertaking! and our live show shenanigans, as we set the stage for Fall of Troy. We’ll get in your face, jump around, bring inflatable alligators. But it’s in the name of creativity and expressing ourselves. Our music might seem mean and aggressive, but we are having so much fun.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every band wants people to hear their music, come to shows, buy merch. It’s harder than it sounds and our main challenge has been reaching people. The hope with The Undertaking! is that people will catch on to the energy and the positivity that we bring to our shows, and will want to be a part of it.
Please tell us about your music.
The Undertaking! is a punk/hardcore band that will bring a raw, energetic and exciting live show to any venue that’ll have us! When you come to a show or listen to one of our songs, we hope that something is stirred in your heart. Maybe it’s that feeling of going to a show as a 15 year old kid again.
We’re known for having a spontaneous and weird live show. We might climb on things (sorry Legacy Brewing in Oceanside).
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is straight up the best city in the world. Our music scene is so supportive. Every band wants to lift each other up. The bummer about San Diego is that on any given night, there are million different options. Getting people to choose your thing is a difficult task, but that’s why it’s important for The Undertaking! to set ourselves apart and bring something new and refreshing to the music scene!
