Meet Gavin Bishop and Devin Castaneda of Urban Unions Photography in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavin Bishop and Devin Castaneda.

Gavin and Devin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
So how did Urban Unions come to be? Well, like all great modern day relationships we met…..on Instagram (insert laughing emoji here). From there, we began photographing together for lifestyle collaborations.

At the time, we were photographing weddings separately, but once we realized how well we worked together, on these collaborations, we decided to put our wedding photography expertise together and Urban Unions was born!

Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say that the road has been smooth.

In 2017, we had about 15 weddings. The next year, we had about five and it has continuously been about that.

I will admit, life happens(we both have two young children and our families took precedence over marketing at times).

Another struggle that we have come across is that San Diego photography market is very saturated. With this comes cheaper photographers that will get the job done, but will not necessarily produce the best quality or get the best shot.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban Unions Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Urban Unions Photography is… well… We shoot pictures!

We started off taking shooting portraits, landscape, cars, you name it before we made Urban Unions.

Now we shoot weddings, engagements, families… basically anything family.

To be honest, the first year that we were a partnership we were busier than we ever thought we would have been initially. Now, we are striving to get back to where we were and surpass that. We would love to be apart of 20-24 individuals lives annually.

Well, we do more than just take pictures. We connect with our brides and grooms, we help out with any questions that they have or we jump in and talk with other vendors if asked. Overall, we do our best to bring down the stress of the day and constantly reassure our brides/grooms that their ceremony(or any part of the day) doesn’t start until they arrive.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Oh man! That is a hard one.

Well, first of all, it is San Diego. We are moments away from the beach, the mountains, and the desert. San Diego has some of the best food that you can find and the diversity of the food is on another level.

The locations that we have been able to take photos at and locations that are on our bucket list are never ending.

Did we mention we are in San Diego? The only thing to dislike about the city is the traffic.

Other than that, let’s go grab a beer, during winter, and watch the sunset in 65 degree weather.
