Meet Veraniz Young-Bean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veraniz Young-Bean.

Veraniz, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started at San Diego City College when I was taking requirements in order to transfer to a university for a career in the medical field, in order to impress and support my family. I was currently a MAC freelancer and receptionist at Avia Salon and Day Spa, so I would go to school then straight to work so I would have my full face of makeup everyday. A student approached me and convinced me to enroll in the cosmetology program. I enrolled and dove headfirst into the cosmetology world. I’ve learned so much and realized I loved other aspects of beauty other than makeup. I graduated and passed the state board, first try on December 27, 2018, merry Christmas to me. I decided that I wanted to focus on hair and makeup (color/ blonde specialist), went from front desk to behind the chair. I haven’t been happier! Seeing the client’s face filled with joy as I turn the chair around and introduce them to their new “crown” (I like to think of hair as our crown that we never take off).

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A struggle was definitely building a clientele. Being new to the industry is the hardest thing you’ll have to go through but you come out with more growth, knowledge, and confidence. Another thing was knowing my worth! I knew what I accomplished on someone’s hair but I felt like well, maybe this person is not doing good financially (due to conversation during the appointment) so I would charge them less than I deserved. But after speaking with a few role models in the industry, I definitely stand my ground when it comes to my service pricing.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist. I specialize in color, blonding, hair extensions and waxing. I am most proud of myself in the aspect of learning different techniques from different people. I feel like my personality sets me apart from other stylists, people, in general. I am told I have a sweet, caring, respectful, fun, educational and overall happy personality. I love building relationships with clients because I know that when I sit in a chair and you ask me about my life, when I come back I love to hair you ask me how that “previous appointment convo” worked out or just anything to show me that I am not just an “ok, sit, chop-chop, you’re done, bye” type of client. That is the environment I DO NOT want to set for clients that sit in my chair. Being interactive, education, that’s big for me because I love teaching clients about their hair, products that will benefit them, management and styling. I like to book an extra 15 min/client to teach them about anything hair.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Growing up, I wanted to be a nurse or a teacher. I knew I wanted to help people! I was the goofy crazy jokester loving, caring, smart, funny one. I made friends with everyone and anyone. All throughout grade school, I had friends in all ‘cliques’. Being friends with x group of people wasn’t going to stop me from being friends with y group of people. I was a peer counselor in high school and it has helped me grow SIGNIFICANTLY! I was into sports and school… the sports helped with school because of the grade requirements but I was always a fan of a busy schedule. I dread being “BORED”.
