Meet Victoria Aragon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Aragon.

Victoria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I don’t exactly remember when I started to draw, I just knew that I loved doing it ever since I picked up a pencil. I mostly drew people and colored a lot during class. My earliest and fondest memory in my drawing journey was when my parents bought the DVD release for Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, it had a feature called “How to draw Spirit by James Baxter”. Though I wasn’t very successful in drawing Spirit, I continued, again and again, making a pile of paper with scribbles of a horse beside me.

Later down the years, I started to be greatly influenced by different mediums such as Japanese cartoons (known as anime), vintage music, crime films, marvel and dc comics, video games and even my own culture. In high school, my AP Art teacher, Juan Galceran, helped teach me more about how to put a message behind my art and using the various mediums to help enhance that. Putting a story behind a single image was something I never really done, I mostly just drew for the aesthetic factors. While I was learning to do that, I was also making my portfolio for Laguna College of Art + Design.

There were various factors as to why I choose LCAD, specifically their Animation program. I was looking for a school that taught you how to be a storyteller and make good character designs for any project. It was also nice that it was located in Calfornia, my home state. So with all these together, I applied and was super thrilled I got accepted. I am currently a senior working on my thesis film.

Has it been a smooth road?
As an artist, there are always highs and lows. I remember when I was younger I was doubting my own artistic ability just because I couldn’t see the improvements after months of trying to practice basic lessons such as the construction of the head and hands. Now I know better that its good to take a step back from your work, take a breather and go back to your artwork with a fresh mind. That there is always gonna have bad art days and piles of horrible drawings. Seeing other artists and their bad sketches and thought process always helps me get motivated to keep trying when I have an off day.
