Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivien Ressler.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Havana Cuba, grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. Moved to NYC where I studied art at the National Academy, Art Students League NYC, graduated from Hunter College, City University with an Art and Education BA. Moved to San Diego where I continue my career as an artist.
Please tell us about your art.
My main focus of my art is the human representation. I use several mediums including acrylic, pastels, watercolor and color pencils. My inspiration is usual the common scene, I can get inspired by a man/woman sitting at a coffee shop reading a book as much as with a simple coffee cup by itself. I see beauty in all the things that surround me and I try my best to represent in an impressionistic manner.
What I hope people take away from my art is the pleasure I get from the subjects I paint and that they leave with an appreciation for what I try to instill in my work. My art work is a reflection of all my experiences, especially on my color selections which is influenced by having spent my early life in the Caribbean.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The politics of today does not reflect what I create. As the result of the advent of mass media and social media, I do believe the role of artists have changed. Attending art events like “Art Basel” or museum shows have a very positive influence on my life and work, it is always a learning experience.
