Today we’d like to introduce you to shrmpboy.
shrmpboy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I used to collect a lot of records…I mean…A LOT of records. One day I got tired collecting other people’s music… that day (4 years ago) I bought an sp404
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth and it still isn’t. I can only begin to count the blessings up until this point. Grad school. Marriage. My first child. A job outside of this that is sustaining and at the same time…rewarding. Balance of these things has been hard. I don’t think without the support of my wife I wouldn’t have been able to put out the things I have so far
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vocochord Records – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In the sea of sp404 users, it truly is hard to find a “unique” sound. The machine itself is primarily known for its effects and most of the people who use it make offbeat Dilla Esque instrumental hip hop now known as “lofi hip hop” and a lot of it can sound redundant or downright depressing! I am not saying the music isn’t good…it just gets tiresome that with a box that has a lot of limitless possibilities…you hear the same stuff. I guess what I like to pride in myself through my work is my versatility and inclusion of other styles. I haven’t quite gotten to the higher BPM’s but I think I am able to make a variety type of sounds yet stay true to my “aesthetic”
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I think the SD Beat Community is pretty positive. I think we have a pretty tight-knit community. I think we all try and put each other up the best we can yet offer a unique type of scene not only through the music but also demographic wise. I think everyone comes from different backgrounds yet we are still able to gel, for the most part. I think SD gets overlooked a lot in the beat scene world of CA. Of course, the bigger market cities would have more of a scene like SF and LA but I think our beatmakers have a lot to offer that don’t get that kind of attention.
