Meet Wana Bernales of Bernales Law Firm in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wana Bernales.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey of pursuing the legal field began when I was 15-years old. That was the first time I appeared in court to act as a translator and advocate for my Korean parents against a dishonest customer. I remember walking down the court hallway toward the courtroom, and I could feel the tension in the hallway from all the nervous people waiting. The only thing that comforted me were the facts: my parents were innocent. It was my duty to protect them, and I knew I had to rise to the occasion by leaving my teenage insecurities at the courtroom door. Needless to say, we won. But, that was when I began to realize the power in being able to speak up.

Although I came to value the importance of legal advocacy, my interests were torn between real estate, business and medicine. Eventually, as I graduated from my undergraduate school studying biology, I began to ponder on what I would truly enjoy doing. I decided to pursue the legal field so I could represent individuals like my parents — honest and hardworking. Since passing the bar, I have managed my own law firm specializing in business and real estate law. I have absolutely no regrets on the career path I chose because everyday I get to impact the community one person at a time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the challenges I faced starting my law firm was my own belief on whether I could successfully manage my own law practice. I witnessed my immigrant parents own several lucrative businesses even though they hardly spoke English. So, I always wanted to believe that I could accomplish more. With mentorship, and a lot of self-development, I have overcome my unbelief. Today, I am proud to say that my law firm has been featured in the San Diego Business Journal and the San Diego Daily Transcript.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My firm specializes in business and real estate law. I am known to help business owners and property owners with various contract and real estate matters. I am most proud of the fact that most of my clients are referrals. I always try my best to ensure that my clients are satisfied with my legal services. But, what I believe sets my firm apart from others is that I am a passionate and honest attorney, and my clients can sense that is what my firm and I represent when they first meet with us.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a household with entrepreneurial parents who were always working. The best way I kept myself entertained and preoccupied was by watching great films, and laughing a lot. I enjoyed films so much that I even took several acting classes, which have helped me become a better orator today.
