Meet We Are One

Today we’d like to introduce you to We Are One.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The members of our band all come from different corners of San Diego. We started out with our lead guitarist, Josiah and our front man, Will, meeting in their home school group and connecting over music. Will and Josiah continued to play music together until the idea for a more concrete band came about. Within a couple years, a 4 piece band was formed but then, slowly lost its two other members once the goals of the band became more serious. Josiah and Will pursued to find more committed members. Josiah met our bass player, Michael, through church and asked him to join. After that, Daniel, an acquaintance of Josiah, was asked to join after his previous band took a hiatus. From there, we practiced together for half a year and began to record demos and play shows.

Please tell us about your art.
We Are One creates original rock music that focuses on real life scenarios while also trying to make their craft fun and entertaining. All the members of We Are One write music. However, when a song matches with the bands style, we bring it into the band and all add our own personal touch to it. We base our music on our Christian faith, with the intention of spreading a message about hope and love, while still appealing to any audience no matter their beliefs. The purpose of our music is to make sure our listeners know that no matter what their situation in life is, they are loved.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
For music today, a lot of it is found via internet (Social media, Soundcloud, Youtube, etc.) and because of this, a lot of musical artists can be found easily by someone across the seas. This has allowed new genres, styles, tastes, etc. to form due to the constant flow of new accessible music. This is a blessing and curse in disguise, because it allows our music to be heard from places we probably wouldn’t even play at shows near. The downside to this is the difficulty of finding our own unique sound out of the hundreds of thousands of other musical artists that are trying to find their own unique sound. Along with the pursuit of “our” sound, we also try to incorporate topics about depression, social issues, hopelessness and in some cases, the more impactful issues we face as a world like meaningless wars, acts of violence in the name of religion, downgrading certain humans for one reason or another. Most of the songs we write and play are relatable to most if not all of the members and are founded upon raw personal experience. Our hope is that people leave our shows with hope on the topics and issues that plague our world today.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most of our fan base connects with us on social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. We have one single out called, “Hanging by a Thread” which is available on all major music services. In the coming months we also plan to release our first EP.

We got our start playing at open mics within places such as Lestat’s West, Univ Studio and Kettle Coffee & Tea. These venues also later allowed us to play full shows, multiple times. From this exposure, we are fortunate enough to start booking at larger venues. We have an upcoming show at Soma, San Diego on April 28 and We Fest at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center on May 19.

We still play at the Lestat’s West open mic and occasionally others. The best support people can give us is coming out to these places and helping to support the venues that allow us and many other local bands to play there.
