Today we’d like to introduce you to Weston Bennett.
Weston, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career path has been very much non-linear. I actually studied biology in college with an intention of attending medical school. While taking a year off after graduating college, I realized that I was not passionate about attending medical school. I began studying photography with some amazing wedding photographers in San Diego and before I knew it, I was doing photography full-time! While I really enjoyed photography, I didn’t imagine that it would become my full-time career (at least not so quickly). I was really fortunate to have some incredible mentors!
Has it been a smooth road?
Again, I’ve been really fortunate to have amazing friends, colleagues, and mentors along my photography journey. That being said, there will always be struggles with entrepreneurship. Running a business is difficult. For me, the most difficult aspect has been adjusting to a seasonal income. Slow season can be really difficult and learning to prepare for the off-season takes some time!
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Weston Bennett Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a wedding photographer who loves all things timeless. Classic elegance will always spark my creativity and get me really excited! I would say that the thing that sets me apart from others is that I have such an intense focus on the experience I deliver to my clients, and the core of that experience is presence. I believe that it’s my job not only to capture the moments as they happen, but to coach my clients to really lean into everything that is happening on their wedding day. I believe in the power of being truly present, and I also believe that it’s human nature to slip out of presence when things get busy. That’s why I often take moments throughout the wedding day to set my camera down and just remind my clients of the importance of these moments. I encourage them to slow down. I tell them to take a breath and just become aware of everything they are experience. In this way, the images we create together become more than just documentation. They become true, living memories. When you look at your wedding images years down the road, they shouldn’t just be reminders of what everything looked like. Rather, they should be reminders of what everything felt like. They should spark emotion. That’s only possible when you are fully present as those moments actually unfold.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There will always be trends when it comes to wedding photography, but trends will come and go. That’s why I’m so connected to the classic and timeless. There will always be a market for that. That’s where I want to stay.
