Today we’d like to introduce you to Will LeFevre.
Hi Will, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started taking photos as a hobby while traveling across Europe when I was 19. My hobby developed over the years into a passion and then into my profession. I became a full-time photographer six years ago.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Yes, it has been. I wasn’t planning on it being my profession early on, but after several people started asking me to take photos for their businesses, events, families, album covers, etc., I found myself busy with work on a regular basis. After about two years into my career as a photographer, I started showing my work in photography/art shows.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in black and white street photography. The timelessness and history of black and white street photography drew me in almost immediately. Also, the many galleries I visited in my early 20’s, allowed me to see the master’s exhibitions up close and really gave me an appreciation for this style of photography. It also inspired me to pursue this style and genre of photography myself.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Yes, this is a major key. Right when I started shooting full time, I apprenticed under Monica Hoover, shooting shoes for Asics. This taught me a lot about the business side of photography, as well as putting together shoots with inspiration boards for clients, scouting locations, working in a studio and learning the ins and outs of your tools. I had to be willing shoot everything and anything when starting out. Also, these relationships I made in the beginning of my career have gone a long way in referrals for future work and maintaining recurring clients.
