Today we’d like to introduce you to Yana Matosian.
Yana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved taking photos and capturing life in its simple beauty. This hobby soon transformed into passion when I purchased my first DSLR camera. Through trial and error (and taking thousands and thousands of photos), I developed my own style that uses natural light to bring out the subject’s simple and natural beauty. Over time, my career has centered on capturing the pure, everyday joys of families, kiddos and soon-to-be moms for those living in and visiting San Diego.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think, one of the main struggles of developing my photography business has been trying to find a balance between work and being a mom. Working from home while raising two little ones can be very challenging and very demanding but, to be honest with you, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I’m so very thankful for my supportive husband and family that let me pursue my dream and are always there to help when it’s necessary.
Please tell us about Yana Matosian Photography.
I am a family photographer, and my passion is to capture each family’s love story. The way a mother looks at her child, the way siblings hold each other’s hands, the way a husband glances at his wife — nothing portrays love better than these simple details photographed during a session.
My goal is for clients, better yet my clients’ kids, to have something to look back at years down the road that documented their family’s story, their love, and connection throughout the years. I take it as the biggest compliment when my clients tell me that they will cherish the photos forever. That is my ultimate goal as a family photographer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think one of my favorite memories from childhood is looking through our old family photos — finding pictures of myself and my sister as little girls, looking at photos of my parents when they were younger, browsing through their wedding album.
Those captured memories will be treasured forever in my heart and is something that I still love doing when I go back home. My dad has passed away five years ago, and those photos are cherished even more right now. I truly believe my love for photography and the realization of how important it is to document a family’s love story has developed from those early years and is something that greatly inspires me today in my business.
