Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuki Okamoto, MS, ATC.
Yuki, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
About ten years ago, I left my hometown with a suitcase and surfboard and moved to San Diego to study English and for surfing of course. Coming to the U.S. not knowing anything or anyone, was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I’ve met so many people who supported and helped me get to where I am now. My family in Japan and Malaysia have been involved in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy business for a quite long time and have been my big supporter as well.
Born and raised in Japan, I played sports for my entire life pretty much and was always fascinated by Human body for some reason. I think that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to become an Athletic Trainer, simply wanted to stay connected with sports. I’ve personally had so many injuries myself, including concussions, and I know the struggles of getting injured and not being able to play sports.
Having been practicing in the Sports Medicine field for few years, one thing I realized was how much Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) was underutilized in the United States. Many professional athletes use HBO for recovery in Japan and other countries, however, in the U.S. HBOT is not as recognized as it is in Japan. I could’t find any reason not to get involved in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, considering the potentials of HBOT in the field of Sports Medicine.
Now more scientific evidence is supporting the use of HBOT for different conditions and injuries, including concussion. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been around many years and used as a medical treatment, however, not many people knew about the therapeutic effects of HBOT. Being an Athletic Trainer with my personal experiences of concussion, I decided to study more about the use of HBOT for concussion.
Not just for concussion, but HBOT can be beneficial for many things. Oxygen is one of the most vital nutrients for your body, and your brain needs it the most throughout the day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a bumpy road in a good and bad way. One thing I could say about the obstacles and challenges is that anything is possible if you believe and are passionate about it. A struggle is a good indicator that you are challenging, just gotta keep on pushing until you break it.
OxyBarix Ltd. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
OxyBarix provides a mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy combined with manual therapies to optimize health and wellness. HBOT can be beneficial for athletic injuries and recovery, including concussions.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe that any achievement is a success, but in reality it’s not that easy as we all know. I think that success is measured by one’s goal of who you want to be and what you want to do for your life. By looking at yourself in a mirror and asking who he or she is, the person who you would look up to doesn’t have to exist in real life, is who you want to be. To get there and be that person, it’s a repeat cycle of success and failure, until you find the next person who you’d look up to.
