Meet Zach Taurosa of Open Mind Design in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Taurosa.

Zach, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Art has always played a big role in my life. Ever since I was a kid, I would always be drawing in my sketchbooks trying to express my feelings as visually as I could. During my high school days, my multimedia teacher introduced me to the world of graphic design and I immediately fell in love. I would spend hours upon hours in my room creating logos, artwork, etc. on my computer. I then realized this was something I wanted to do as a career. I eventually received my associate’s degree for graphic design at PLATT College San Diego, now I’m currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree for 3D Modeling/Animation. My dream job is to have my own clothing line someday which I’m already working on.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When it comes to art, I’m a total perfectionist. If I see one little detail that looks off in one of my pieces, then it’s not complete to me. That was a big challenge for me, especially in college, when I had deadlines.

Open Mind Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I currently have a small online store where I sell some of my artwork and t-shirts, you can check it out over at openmindco.bigcartel.com. I also post a lot of my work on Instagram, you can follow me @openmdesign

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is different for everyone. If I create something and like it then I’ll feel successful, it’s not always about getting from point A to point B or making a bunch of money. You have to go through obstacles first, and going through those obstacles without giving up is my definition of success. Slow and steady wins the race.

Hi Zach – your Mom is a friend of mine from our Delta days in San Francisco (just had lunch with her in Oceanside) and I saw your link on her FB page. I think your designs are great – especially the bat country and undersea treasure chest. Is treasure chest available as a t-shirt or hoodie? Would love to have a hoodie like that. I didn’t see it on your store page. Do you have a FB page?
