Meet Zeena Gregg of Zeena Gregg Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeena Gregg.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been interested in photography since I was a child. My dad took lots of photos of us growing up and put together a scrapbook of me that covers the first 10 years of my life. We moved a lot (from England to the Carribean, then to Nigeria, and then to California) so I loved looking through the scrapbook to help me remember all the places we had lived and traveled to. I signed up for the yearbook staff in high school and played around with a film SLR camera in my early 20s. When our 3 kids were young and all playing sports, I invested in a DSLR and took a few photography classes. I discovered early on during the class assignments that I was much happier when there were people in my photos. In 2007 a co-worker (I was working in Human Resources at the time) told me that her friends wanted me to photograph their wedding. I shot their wedding a few months later and decided to pursue photography as a business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting better at the technical aspects of photography was the easy part. Learning to be a business person turned out to be much more challenging. As a one-person business, I had to learn accounting, marketing, editing, and social media.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Zeena Gregg Photography – what should we know?
I photograph high school seniors, families, children, and do some corporate and editorial work as well. I specialize in high school senior portraits and really strive to create a custom and enjoyable experience for each student that I work with. I am most proud of being able to create a business that is recognized and well known in my community. I have a senior model program that provides a number of opportunities for my senior models to participate in a variety of shoots as well as other fun opportunities. I am also proud of my studio space. Although it is in my home (indoors and outdoors), I have been able to create a space that looks professional, trendy and unexpected.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe the fact that I really try to exceed my client’s expectations is part of my success. My communication style is to be direct yet extremely detailed and informative so that every client knows what to expect. I am also extremely detail oriented so everything from packaging and tissue paper to a beverage/snack station for clients to client gifts is well thought out, planned and represent my brand.
