Nathan Keys of Boise, Idaho on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nathan Keys. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is the most important. Intelligence and energy are useful, but in my opinion, cannot be rightly applied without integrity.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Nathan Keys, author of the epic fantasy adventure series, The Epic of Marindel. My mission is to write stories that bring readers hope and purpose. Two books of the series and a companion study guide are out now, and the third one is on the way! I also enjoy nature and travel, and I have fun tying travel into my brand by photographing my books with dramatic natural backdrops.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I once believed that my words didn’t matter, that my stories didn’t matter, and that my interests would never be interesting to anyone else. When I learned to accept and be grateful for who God created me to be, I found the confidence to share my creativity with others and leave a positive impact.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’m a firm believer in character development, and not just in the books we read. Enduring loss, pain, and hardship has taught me to never take blessings for granted, to be grateful in all circumstances, to strive to become a better person each day, and to never give up fighting for a brighter future.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
My MBTI type is INTJ, which is an easy way of saying I’ve never thought highly of fads or trends to begin with (they rarely align with my interests, anyway). I also have a background in the sciences, which has taught me to investigate for myself how things work and why. Occasionally, a fad might be useful, and it may even signal a foundational shift. The willingness to learn and adapt, as well as being informed on history, geopolitics, psychology, and technological advancements, are some ways that help me sift through momentary hype to find what’s real and worth paying attention to.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want to be remembered in a way similar to how we now think of my literary heroes, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien: just a guy with brilliant ideas and a vivid imagination, who enjoyed telling great stories and sharing them with a world that could always use a reminder that, in the end, the heroes will slay the dragon.
