Nick Scacco shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Nick, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I am a full time teacher, husband and father. Outside of creating art and wood working I am with my family and working with students. I try to get up at 5:30 and that is when I write and create art. If I am not creating then I exercise during my early mornings which entails heading to the climbing gym and then doing a beach walk. On the days I am not exercising I get to drive my daughter to school and have time to talk about friendships, schoolwork and the ins and outs of third grade. At school I am a middle and high school science teacher. I live to help students build their confidence, connect, and get excited about science. At home we love to cook and bake together and watch movies.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
3 years ago I started on Etsy with my company Scacco Matto. I create fine art and woodworking – I have customers in Europe, Australia, USA and Central America. I specialize in fine art inspired by nature — capturing wildlife, national parks, and landscapes through expressive watercolor and acrylic works. Last year I worked on building out capacity for completing international orders, website and sourcing a variety of products to feature my work on. This year I am working on the custom mural capacity of my business and licensing my artwork.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom was a huge influence on me. She was a constant supporter of me and believed I could do anything. I think everyone needs someone like that in their life. For me it didn’t fully grow out until I was older but those seeds of belief were planted when I was really young.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first started my business I almost stopped before posting my first Etsy item. It was my wife during a late night conversation that gave me the confidence to move forward and create my business.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would say that Nick cares about being kind. I genuinely love life and want to share that joy with others.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop worrying about what I can’t control. I would cut out the BS that is busywork, a distraction and drill down to what I value most and only work towards and put effort in those things.
