We’re looking forward to introducing you to Reyes Barrios. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Reyes, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wear several hats so I kinda live my life the same way I dance. I improvise and go with the flow. I work part time for Sharp Mary Birch, part time as a Medical Interpreter and I am a Flamenco Artist-Teacher.
So every day is improvised depending on which hat I am wearing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I began dancing at the young age of 4. I was drawn to the sound of the lament in the song and the expression and power in the dance. Flamenco was and is the only art form I know how to do.
Flamenco can be done in groups or as a solo dancer. I am a solo dancer. I perform at prestigious venues like the Fountain theatre in Hollywood and Cafe Sevilla in San Diego among other events.
Flamenco moves something in me. It is emotionally raw — it channels grief, passion, defiance, and joy all at once. It gives me an outlet that nothing else can.
I feel a connection to the the music, the rhythm, and the history,
Flamenco is expression without words. The body becomes the language. Through footwork, posture, and gesture, you might be saying things that can’t be said any other way.
I am drawn to the discipline. Flamenco demands precision, patience, and intense focus.
Flamenco is in my blood and bones.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I had all the time in the world. We dońt
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say be patient and Love the Life you Live and you will Live the life you love.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I simply dońt have the energy to be fake. Not on or off stage. When I am on stage I believe in showing the audience who you truly are. No need to be fake. It´s ok to be a little not so pretty on stage. That makes it real.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop working for the industry and I would simply teach and perform.
