Rising Stars: Meet Ally Rose of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ally Rose.

Hi Ally, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always described the way I found my career as a happy accident. I was born a creative person, and I nurtured that creativity growing up in any creative space I could get my hands. As I was pursuing my major and teaching dance full time, a friend of mine handed me a camera and asked me to learn how to use it. We teamed up and started in the deep end with weddings, and it’s safe to say that my finger hasn’t left the shutter since..

As someone who began their photography journey in the wedding industry, I’d describe that learning experience as nothing other than photography boot camp. I was forced to learn and learn fast, and I wouldn’t trade my initial exposure to photography for anything. I loved what I had found in photography the way you love something you’ve done your whole life – photography became an extension of me. As I branched out from weddings into things like portraits, products, fashion, and brand work, I brought with me the backbone of experience that wedding photography gave me. While weddings remain a huge part of my career, I’ve loved having a hand in so many avenues of creative work, and am truly thankful to do what I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the biggest struggle for any creative, myself included, is believing in your work enough to take a chance on yourself. I grew my business through college and post grad while I worked a corporate marketing job, never feeling like it was the right time to do only photography. I spent every day at my marketing job talking myself out of the courage it would take to do photography full time, until three years had passed me and I started realizing that life wasn’t full of “perfect times” to do anything. I would always be sitting here waiting for my career to come to me, or I could quit today and run to it. I quit my corporate job in that moment and began my path with full time photography.

A huge obstacle for me once I became a full time business owner was trusting in the development process – I burned so much time psyching myself out and scared I’d made a risky call. If I could extend any advice to other potential business owners, it’s that knowing you’re in the position you were meant to be in, no matter where you are in the process, is when you’ll truly start to see your business transform. The second I met my business with the confidence and belief it deserved was the same second my dream job was become a reality. On good days and bad days, this is truly what I was meant to do and I’m loving every second of it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding, fashion, brand and lifestyle work. While I definitely have an identifiable photography style, I believe what sets me apart simply is just listening. I love to know what a client wants to get out of their photography session, and that intention makes my shoots a collaborative experience. I want every client to walk away with the images they dreamed of, and the only way that I can successfully do that is if I’m asking the right questions and referencing their inspiration photos.

Regardless of the type of shoot it is, my photography focuses on being natural. Nothing artificial, overly curated or cookie cutter. My shoots include a relaxed and genuine atmosphere, ensuring each image feels like you.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
All my fondest memories from my childhood include being outside. I grew up pretty removed from technology and spent most of my time outdoors, whether that be playing soccer or dancing or riding bikes or catching lizards (still not sure what compelled me to make that a hobby).
