Rising Stars: Meet Angela Mejía-Moore of El Cajon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Mejía-Moore.

Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From the time I was a little girl, I knew what it felt like to struggle with reading. In 4th grade—a critical year for literacy growth—I moved to a new school and quickly realized I was far behind my peers. I wasn’t placed in any reading group; instead, I was handed a different book to read on my own. I felt dumb, embarrassed, and invisible. My teacher tried to help, but soon realized I needed more support than she could give in the classroom.
That’s when she referred me to the after-school reading teacher, Ms. Becka. Inside a tiny room, no bigger than a closet, something extraordinary happened: she helped me reach grade level, but more importantly, she lit a spark inside me. For the first time, I believed in myself. I no longer thought I was “dumb.” Her influence was so powerful that by the time I entered college, I knew I wanted to become that kind of teacher—the one who helps struggling readers discover their own strengths and confidence.
For many years, I lived out that dream in the classroom. Teaching became my calling and my passion. But life took an unexpected turn when I was struck with a severe case of Rheumatoid Arthritis that crippled my hands and feet. After multiple surgeries and a long, painful battle, the school district forced me into disability retirement. It felt like my passion had been ripped away.
Yet, through new medicines and sheer determination, I regained enough strength to return to what I was meant to do: teach. That’s when I founded Readiscover Literacy Online Tutoring, a place where I could serve students who were struggling just like I once did. My mission is to equip children with a literacy “tool belt” of strategies they can carry for life—skills that empower them not just to catch up, but to thrive as confident, lifelong learners.
I am fearless when it comes to equipping students with the tools they need to succeed. Every child has a unique story, and every child deserves the chance to unlock their potential. My own journey—from struggling reader, to inspired teacher, to someone who fought her way back from disability—shapes every lesson I teach.
I hope by sharing my story, I’ll have the privilege of helping your child discover theirs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
