Rising Stars: Meet Arianna Patterson of Los Angeles, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arianna Patterson.

Hi Arianna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always loved art and wanted to be involved in making art and learning about the art world in any way I could. I went to school for graphic design and art. While in school I started making cyanotype prints and fell in love with the process. I started experimenting with substrates, printing on glass and fabrics, and even animating a video using individually printed frames. I eventually developed a visual language of pairing photos with objects like lace or flowers to create a nostalgic and haunting juxtaposition. Currently I am making toned prints in a dark brown color utilizing photographs I took on trips or in my day to day life. To get that dark brown tone, I use black tea and soak my prints once they are fully developed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am often the worst critic of my own work and it’s often hard to get past that judgement. Sometimes it prevents me from even starting a project at all. I need to remember to keep creating, because the only thing that defines an artist is the fact that they actively make art, they don’t just think about making it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make cyanotype prints which is created using a UV sensitive solution and photo negatives. When the solution is exposed to the sun, it creates the positive image. I create images mostly inspired by witches, magic and other historically female and queer archetypes.I am drawn to objects and images that hold memory and beauty, often associating them with energies that are passed through generations of women. I want to keep the memories of my life and the women before me alive through my work.
