Rising Stars: Meet Ashley Johnson of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Johnson.

Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in San Diego—specifically North County—and after spending time away for school in Colorado and then a few years on the East Coast to start my career, I moved back home in April of 2024. There really is no place like San Diego, so when my lease was up, it just felt right to come back.

A few months after moving, I unexpectedly lost my job, which gave me a lot of free time and space to reflect on what I wanted next. I’d been interested in pivoting into marketing, so I started teaching myself different platforms and skills. At the same time, I was exploring San Diego in a way I never had before—through an adult lens—and I started casually making TikToks of the places I was discovering.

It felt like I was re-experiencing my hometown. I found myself in neighborhoods I’d never really spent time in, uncovering hidden gems and revisiting spots from my childhood. One of my first videos that got a surprising amount of views was of the MCAS Miramar Air Show—a random post, but such a nostalgic part of growing up here. Since then, I’ve really enjoyed capturing the vibe of San Diego, from small businesses to big events, and watching how my style has evolved since I first started posting in September 2024.

For me, this account has become a personal highlight reel—not just of San Diego, but of my own journey since moving back. I think there’s a lot of power in using social media in a positive way, especially to support local communities. What’s been really cool, too, is discovering the community of other local creators. It doesn’t feel competitive—it’s supportive and inclusive, which just adds to how special this whole experience has been.

Looking ahead, I’d love to connect with more small businesses, creatives, and people in the community to collaborate on content. I think the most engaging stories come from working together, and I’m excited to continue building something that not only highlights what makes San Diego amazing—but also helps others be seen and celebrated too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges has been learning to embrace humility when it comes to creating content. At first, I was definitely shy about it. I would try to be super sneaky taking videos, especially in public spaces where people might be in the background. It just felt awkward!

But over time, I gained more confidence and realized that people are actually really supportive and curious when you explain what you’re doing. Now, I’ll openly say something like, “Hey, I’m just grabbing a quick clip for a local video I’m working on,” and most of the time people are excited to be a part of it or help out.

My friends have been super supportive. I’ve definitely become that person who says, “Hands off the food!” the moment it arrives so I can snap a photo or grab a quick video. But they get it—they’ve seen how dedicated I’ve been to this and they’re always cheering me on, which makes a huge difference. It’s definitely been a lesson in putting myself out there and not overthinking how I’m being perceived, which has helped me grow both creatively and personally.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Locals Only San Diego is my way of sharing the places, events, and hidden gems that make this city so special. I grew up here, moved away, and came back as an adult with a whole new appreciation for everything San Diego has to offer.

I make TikToks about my favorite spots—whether it’s a cool coffee shop, a local event, or just a pretty spot to watch the sunset. What makes it different is that it’s coming from someone who knows the area but is still constantly discovering new things. I’m proud that people have told me they’ve found new favorite places through my videos. It feels like I’m just helping people fall in love with San Diego the way I have.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Right now, what matters most to me is growth. I’m in my twenties, and I’m really leaning into this season of saying yes to new experiences, stepping outside my comfort zone, and learning from whatever comes my way. Having a growth mindset is so important to me—I genuinely believe that even the smallest interactions can leave a big impact, and there’s always something to take away if you’re open to it. I’m focused on evolving into the best version of myself, and that means being curious, reflective, and willing to grow through it all.
