Rising Stars: Meet Brook Batuyong of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brook Batuyong.

Hi Brook, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started about 5 years ago, I was working at a bridal shop and the Bridal Bazaar was around the corner and we were getting ready and planning our booth. I remembered when I went as a bride the booths that caught my attention the most were ones with flowers and decor. I mentioned to our owner that I’ll make a small arrangement for our booth to draw in more attraction.

I made a small little arrangement with little to no flower arrangement experience. But I had so much fun doing it! From there I started making more at home, watching videos and anytime my friends were having a party of sorts, I offered to make flower arrangements.

In December of 2020 I had a friend getting married and when I asked her about flowers she said she was quoted so much and was just going to do it herself. I offered to help her and had her just pay for the flowers and I’ll do all the labor. I told her I wanted to start doing this and she believed in me! Ever since that day I have grown as not just a business but an artist. I’ve done weddings all over San Diego! And have been featured in People magazine back in 2022! I have been able to also learn from other amazing florists in the San Diego area to help me grow. I’m so thankful for the florist community and how we all help and support each other.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every road has its bumps! From floral foam breaking in transit or the scorching sun in July taking the life out of my hydrangeas. Or not making enough boutonnières and having to make more on the spot! They all make for great learning experiences and fun stories.

I think one of the biggest struggles in the beginning was trying to prove something to others. Getting your work out there and building a strong portfolio to get credibility. However looking back now, it wasn’t just about proving myself but also believing in myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding and event florals. I am most proud of my versatility, I can do the spring time organic look, to more structured and formal, but also can do the rustic. And I think that’s what sets me apart, while also being on an affordable side. I love working closely with my brides I go into so much detail that when florals arrive on the wedding day they are blown away and their expectations have been exceeded!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I have been loving the small and simple bridal bouquets! For example, Selena Gomez and Sophia Richie, their bouquets were perfect. After working in bridal and now flowers, the flowers should not over take or completely cover the dress! That is something I am looking forward to.
