Rising Stars: Meet Camila Santucci of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Santucci

Hi Camila, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been quite fulfilling and transformative. As a young adult, I started my path in the United States, deeply committed to learning English and immersing myself in the rich American culture. This dedication led me to complete the naturalization process and become an American citizen, a pivotal moment.

Academically, I worked hard and earned my degree with honors, a significant achievement. Throughout my career, I’ve explored various fields, including administration, animal science, research, dermatology, and regulatory compliance, spanning private, academic, and government sectors. This diverse experience allowed me to contribute to impactful research on vital health issues like HIV, melanoma, lymphoma, malaria, brain ischemia, and ALS.

From an early age, I was passionate about supporting causes that create positive change, and I’m proud to say I’ve realized that goal. Today, I am a project assistant for a nonprofit organization that monitors flash floods worldwide.

Life transforms when you create opportunities to pursue your passions. I have found my dream job and am now engaged in work that brings me true joy and satisfaction.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was when I decided to leave my country and family to move to the US. In addition, learning English and adapting to a new culture as a young adult was no small feat when I arrived in California in 1996. However, I took on this challenge head-on, knowing that overcoming challenges was essential for personal and professional growth.

Another challenge came in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. Like many people, there was a need to reinvent myself. I then changed careers and became a public servant. This shift was inspired by my father and aunt, who dedicated their lives to serving others and the need to hold a stable job. However, this new role presented its own set of struggles. As a government employee, I faced immense frustration with a system mired in red tape that stifled my ability to advocate for the community.

After working in four different departments over two years, it became clear that I was not in a position where my contributions could genuinely matter. My passion and strong work ethic deserved more than this stagnation. Recognizing this, I took the bold step of leaving the perceived security and benefits of government employment. I understood that genuine fulfillment comes from pursuing paths that align with my values. This decision led me to my dream job, where I engage in work that fuels my passion and brings me absolute satisfaction.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a project assistant at a non-profit organization focused on addressing global critical water challenges. I specialize in project coordination and support, ensuring our initiatives run smoothly and effectively. Our organization is known for its commitment to leveraging science and research to tackle pressing societal issues related to water resources.

What I’m most proud of is contributing to projects that address immediate needs and promote long-term sustainability. We don’t just focus on the technical aspects; we also engage with communities to understand their unique challenges and tailor our solutions accordingly.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We prioritize education and training to strengthen community resilience in managing water resources. By collaborating, we can create and implement effective disaster preparedness strategies.
