Today, we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Castrejón.
Hi Carlos, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My life as an artist, I recalled doing art since my first years of life. The doors to a different way of expression were opened when I arrived in San Diego at the age of sixteen; my artwork then spoke about my land, which stayed behind, between figurative drawings and paintings of characters and topography of local and ancient places in Mexico.
My approach to art changed with time, exploring art movements and reading about many artists. I experienced big changes in my color pallet, and my expressive brush stroke took over my canvas. Since then, I have explored social interventions, political views, landscapes, and any other subjects worthy of art expression. I feel that I achieved artistic maturity; however, I challenged my art to reach higher quality for presentation, always keeping in mind originality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started this journey, the joy of creating was like a dream. This changed when I started to deal with art shows and other events related to art. I believe that entering the art world and all the ups and downs could be discouraging.
Being at the level of a professional artist is a discipline that requires time, effort, and, yes, investing money on shows, art supplies, and other expenses. I think entering a prestigious gallery or knocking on a museum door has been the hardest part of this journey.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a visual artist; I have worked in different disciplines and all sources of mediums, painting, drawing, sculpting, acrylics, oils, ink, pencil, pastels, etc. I work on all forms of subjects, from figurative to abstract, small, large, and, on occasion, monumental.
Creating large format paintings are what I love these days, but when I’m experimenting something new I gets me excited and I think my pride grows. I like to say that I hardly ever say no to an artistic challenge, and I approached such with respect and the acknowledgment of learning more about what I could do.
Other secondary professions are art restorer, art designer, consultant, art curator, owner of an art gallery, and art dealer. In all these categories, I take pride in always keeping your clients satisfied with my services.
So, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you before we go? How can they support you?
I often work with other artists, art organizations, or individual design firms on different projects for institutions or individual clients. These could include fine art, custom picture framing, faux finishes, and art installation, among other services.
Some projects involve city and state organizations, local high schools, and local art galleries. My services are open to people of any social/economic level or status.
