Rising Stars: Meet Cathy Rodriguez of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Rodriguez.

Hi Cathy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story really began during a very special family moment, my daughter’s baby shower. We made cupcakes and cookies as thank-you treats for the guests, just something homemade from the heart. We didn’t expect anything beyond people enjoying them, but the response was amazing. Everyone loved them so much that they started telling us we should turn our recipes into a real business.
Some even joked that I should quit teaching and start baking full-time.
That encouragement is what planted the seed. What started as a simple family celebration slowly turned into something much bigger.
From there, everything grew naturally. Baking has always been a part of our home, and with people continuing to ask for more-more cupcakes, more cookies, more flavors-we realized we might have something truly special. Eventually, it became a small business run by the three of us: myself and my two daughters. Each of us has our own role, whether it’s baking, decorating, or handling the business side.
Everything we’ve built has been hands-on, family-driven, and from the heart. Every pop-up, every order, and every kind message from a customer reminds us why we started.
It’s a journey rooted in family, creativity, and community support, and we’re grateful for every step of it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. We had to learn everything from scratch pricing, supplies, permits, and how to balance baking with our regular jobs and family life.
Keeping up with orders while maintaining quality was one of the toughest parts, especially during busy weekends or pop-ups. Rising ingredient costs and unexpected expenses were challenges too. But every obstacle pushed us to get more organized and stronger as a team, and the support from our customers has made it all worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I was younger, I used to bake for big events like weddings and quinceañeras, teaching myself most of what I know along the way. Later, I became a teacher, which gave me skills in organization, patience, and creativity, qualities that naturally carry over into our baking business.
What’s most meaningful to me is how this business has become a way to share those skills with my daughters, especially now that one of them is a mom. It’s been such a joy to work together, teach each other, and create something we can all be proud of. This isn’t just about baking, it’s about family, teamwork, and passing down knowledge in a way that brings us closer every day.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is family and the time we share together. Whether it’s baking for special occasions, running our business, or just being there for each other, those memories mean everything. Family is what motivates me every day and reminds me of what truly matters in life, love, support, and creating joy together.
