Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Medina.
Hi Christopher, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born on April 3, 1990, in Camp Pendelton, Oceanside, California. Though, I lived most of my life in the Philippines doing my studies from elementary to college.
I’ve always been interested in art from a very young age. I remember having fun drawing mandalas and tribal designs when I was a kid. In 2013, I got back to the US. After that year, I started working as a med-tech caregiver. It wasn’t easy and I’ve been consistently working hard in improving myself.
Many people noticed my potential for tattoo-making but it was my very close friend who kicked off my tattoo-making journey. He gave me a tattoo machine because he wanted to support my passion for learning. Even to this day, I feel grateful and blessed for that.
I started making tattoos on fake skin. After 6 months, I feel confident and so I started doing it on real skin. I was getting awesome feedback and that was the day, I started having more and more clients.
If it wasn’t for Thakuya, I won’t be able to showcase my talent. He’s the owner of the Goodlife Tattoo and he gave me the chance to work with him and practice my craft. I’m so grateful to him as my mentor and support and he also became a real family to me.
Currently. I have been tattooing for 2 years and 4 months and celebrating my 1 year in Goodlife Tattoo on April 14.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I decided to turn my passion for making beautiful tattoo arts into full-time work, I know there’d be a lot of sacrifices to make and plenty of obstacles to conquer along the way. Before going fully committed to my tattoo craft, I was working another full-time job and so I needed to do some balancing acts. I had to consistently manage my time and energy wisely, at the same time, taking up the challenge of building a client base in this creative industry. I’m excited about the possibilities, now that I’m entirely focused on doing what I love – tattoos!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Unlike other creative endeavors, there’s no room for error in tattoo making. Whenever a client trusts me enough to lend his/her skin as the canvas for my art, the least I can do to give back that trust is to create the tattoo closest to their dream/vision. I want that moment of vulnerability to have a huge payoff for each of my clients. What sets me apart is I’m determined and willing to go to great lengths to create the detailed fine lines, be it black and gray, or the colored ones that make up that awesome tribal tattoo designs. And I’m most proud when I know that I created a neat tribal tattoo and see the satisfied look on my clients’ faces that says I’ve done great work and it was all worth the pain!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Living in San Diego is simply amazing! The good weather, the great beaches, the beautifully diverse people in it. It’s just the best!
