Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Montano.
Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story has always felt like a love letter — to resilience, to art, to the people who’ve held me through every season. I started photography the way most people stumble into magic… by accident, by curiosity, and by a hunger to capture what my heart could never fully say out loud.
For years, I poured myself into destination weddings, editorial work, and soft, romantic storytelling. The world saw the polished images, but behind the lens, I was someone battling health storms I never expected. In April 2025, my life completely shifted when I was hospitalized with a brain abscess, aphasia, and a long recovery that rewired the way I speak, think, move, and feel. Healing became my second full-time job. And somehow, through all the pain and uncertainty, creativity stayed — not as pressure, but as a quiet companion reminding me I still had purpose.
That season birthed something sacred: HVMMINGBYRD.
It came to me as a symbol of survival — a tiny creature with heartbeats like prayers, wings like miracles. HVMMINGBYRD became my lifestyle and apparel brand, inspired by the brain surgery that tried to take my voice and the community that helped me rebuild it. It stands for empowerment, healing, visibility, and giving other survivors a place to feel seen. It’s cozy Cali-vintage tees, beachy totes, and a mission to turn pain into something people can wear proudly.
Today, I’m still a wedding photographer — moving slower, more intentionally, honoring the pace my brain needs. But I’m also a storyteller in a new way. Through my podcast, through my writing, through HVMMINGBYRD, through every piece of art that rises out of my recovery.
And honestly? I feel incredibly lucky to be working with a magazine like this one. Sharing my story here feels like one of those full-circle moments where the universe whispers, “you made it — keep going.”
My journey isn’t clean or perfect, but it’s mine. And every chapter keeps teaching me that even with broken wings, you can still fly — sometimes even higher than before.
brighter days are coming 🐦🔥
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A smooth road? Not even close — my path has looked more like a winding mountain trail with unexpected storms, soft miracles, and a lot of learning to breathe again.
One of the biggest turning points in my life was my health crisis. I was hospitalized with a brain abscess that led to emergency surgery, months of recovery, aphasia, mobility challenges, memory issues, and a long list of symptoms that reshaped my entire world. I went from photographing full wedding days to relearning how to speak, how to understand language, how to manage sensory overload, and how to be patient with a brain that now works differently.
It wasn’t just physical — it was emotional and spiritual.
I had to grieve the version of me who could work endlessly without thinking, who could talk fast, who could process easily. I had to accept that my healing pace is slower, softer, and more intentional now. Even today, I still navigate fatigue, speech difficulties, headaches, overstimulation, and the invisible weight of neurological injury.
But through all of this, I’ve also found strength I never knew existed.
My struggles became the soil where HVMMINGBYRD grew — a brand born from disrupted brain pathways, stubborn hope, and the belief that survivors deserve to feel powerful and beautiful. My art looks different now, but it’s deeper. My voice is quieter, but it’s truer. My life is slower, but it’s more meaningful.
The road hasn’t been smooth — it’s been humbling, holy, and wildly human. And somehow, every challenge has shaped me into the storyteller I am today.
brighter days are coming 🐦🔥
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a storyteller at heart, and my work flows across many creative channels. I specialize in maternity, lifestyle and editorial wedding photography, capturing the raw, untamed, and deeply romantic moments that often go unseen — the fleeting glances, the laughter in the quiet spaces, the realness that makes love feel alive. My work is known for being intimate, authentic, and reflective of the people I photograph, celebrating bodies, emotions, and connection in ways that are often overlooked in traditional photography.
Beyond photography, I’ve started a podcast, “50 First Dates with Chris HVMMINGBYRD” on Spotify and Apple, as a gentle chronicle of my healing journey and the lessons that come with living through medical trauma, brain surgery, and recovery. It’s a space where I explore resilience, connection, and the small sparks of magic that remind us life is worth savoring.
I also founded my lifestyle brand, HVMMINGBYRD, which grew from my recovery and my desire to create pieces that are cozy, empowering, and rooted in healing. HVMMINGBYRD is my ode to survival, self-expression, and turning challenges into tangible joy — from soft tees to beachy totes, it’s a celebration of individuality, resilience, and community.
On a personal note, I’ve recently discovered that I am on the autism spectrum, which has given me new clarity, self-awareness, and insight into how I work, create, and connect with the world. This awareness has shaped how I pace my work, approach clients, and embrace my creative projects with intention and grace.
I am most proud of being able to create, document, and share my journey — to turn my experiences into art, stories, and spaces that uplift and resonate with others. What sets me apart is the combination of vulnerability, resilience, and authenticity I bring into everything I do: whether behind the camera, behind the microphone, or designing something to wear and live in. My work is a reflection of a life rebuilt, a heart that refuses to be quiet, and a commitment to celebrate the real, messy, beautiful human experience.
brighter days are coming.
What’s next?
Right now, my future is rooted in healing — not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually, and creatively. I’m learning how to rebuild my life after brain surgery, how to honor my new pace, and how to grow into the person this journey has shaped me to become.
Creatively, I’m expanding in ways that feel exciting and a little wild. I’m getting ready to start a YouTube channel, a space where I can share more of my recovery story, my artistry, my brand HVMMINGBYRD, and the unexpected poetry of rebuilding your life one tender step at a time. I’ve always dreamed of being on TV or even Netflix — and dreams are only dreams until you try… so I’m trying. I’m putting myself out there, slowly and intentionally, trusting that the universe meets you where your courage begins.
I’m looking forward to collaborations, new episodes of my podcast, the continued growth of HVMMINGBYRD, and creating spaces where other survivors, creatives, and neurodivergent souls feel seen and safe.
My future isn’t rushed — it’s unfolding, healing, blooming. And I’m excited to see where these wings take me next.
