Today we’d like to introduce you to Dajahn Blevins
Hi Dajahn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
God blessed me in 1986 to be able to create my own nonprofit San Diego Urban Warriors Inc. for advocacy and creative empowerment to develop youth families and community in health education and using theatre, media and cultural enrichment to celebrate the culture health and heritage of black youth families and community, raising the level of awareness and appreciation for black culture art and heritage through cultural enrichment music dance art fashion food and entertainment showcases. The effort has resulted in the establishment of San Diego first Black Art & Cultural Enrichment district an emerging tourist destination where the world can meet to celebrate Black history heritage accomplishments art and diverse culture from around the world.
We seek funding and volunteers to produce Mr. Black San Diego in February, Annual Kuumba Fest in May, FAT (fashion art talent) Extravaganza in July, and Black Family Empowerment Day BFED in September, and on going Saturday School Cultural Enrichment Classes and Black Boys 2 Men Reading & Mentoring Circles
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have been displaced first by Covid 19, Due to closure of park where activities are held and then the flood in January 2024 and always the need for funding
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the CEO of San Diego Urban Warriors and work with artists, teachers, health educators, mentors, dancers, drummers, fitness leaders and creative volunteers of all types using creativity to make situations better in developing wellbeing for youth families and community and organizing culminating celebrations at the end of each month.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Our community has been last on the list to receive assistance
