Rising Stars: Meet Daniel Markowitz of Little Italy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Markowitz

Daniel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The idea behind LoFi Potter is to create an experience.

My hand made pottery is meant to be paired with the LoFi music that I compose. The concept is that a customer purchases a coffee mug or ash tray. Then while using that item they throw on one of my musical compositions. Creating an ambiance, an experience, a mood, a vibe.

My passion for pottery is relatively new. I have always been a creative. When I was a kid I would make contraptions out of duct tape or draw for hours. My parents got me started on piano when I was young. I always had a good ear. As I got older I began composing, playing in bands and eventually studying music in college. I got my degree in Jazz Piano Performance from San Francisco State University and performed with rock bands and jazz groups all through San Francisco and the Bay Area.

In early 2020 I started producing LoFi jazz. Taking the skills I developed with piano performance and music production. You can find my music on all streaming platforms under the artist name LFp (LoFi potter).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What started out as a distraction from a looming medical surgery, turned into a real passion.

Back in June of 2022 my wife and I went to visit my aunts in Tuscon Arizona. At the time I had recently found out I had a non functioning pituitary tumor the size of a grape. After speaking with different specialist, I booked the surgery to get it removed. While anxiously waiting for the surgery date to arrive, my wife and I took a quick trip to Arizona. My aunt has been a potter for more than 20 years and has a home studio. I figured while I was there I would give it a try. I ended up spending the entire weekend learning to throw on the pottery wheel and was instantly hooked.

Doing pottery became my therapy. I was able to channel all my anxieties and fears into something productive. Playing with clay got my mind off of the upcoming surgery. When I got back to San Diego, I purchased a wheel and supplies. Then eventually a kiln. I studied videos of potters on YouTube and whenever I had questions I would call my aunt. I tried different techniques and forms practicing every day for hours.

The surgery was a success! After three months of recovering I was able to start doing pottery again. About a year of making pottery every day, I created my company LoFi Potter. Combining my love for music and passion for pottery.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My style is Funky Modern.

I like to play with unique forms and colors that pop. The shapes I make are refined and light. They are comfortable to use and stand out as fun talking pieces. Most of my pottery is considered functional. I like making mugs, tumblers, bowls, plates, teapots, lidded jars and such. I do also make some planter pots, vases, candle stick holders, and other various types of decor.

You can find my work several places. I have many pieces listed online on my Etsy store. My work is also sold at Home Ec and Apollo Emporium in Little Italy. Every now and then I do a holiday market or art walk.

If you want to see more of my creative process follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. I make short videos accompanied with my music. I also give followers updates to new products and dates I do markets.

I really enjoy making things people will use and love.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have been very fortunate to find great mentors in studying music and pottery.

Before transfering to university I went to Mira Costa Community College. Some of the best teachers and mentors that I had were at that school. My advice would be to utilize all the resources you can. Community college was fairly inexpensive and gave me the opportunity to take my craft to the next level. When you find a teacher who you look up to, don’t take that for granted. Do your best to show them that you are committed to growing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, be curious! Chances are they are just excited to have a good student as you are to have a great teacher.

For the past ten years I have made a living teaching piano. I feel honored to work with some awesome families. Its awesome seeing my students musical journey and being a mentor in their lives. To learn any craft it takes commitment and dedication. It’s all about embracing the practice and being proud of the small steps.
