Rising Stars: Meet Danielle Van Horn of La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Van Horn.

Hi Danielle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my personal training career in 2014. As a teenager I struggled to control my weight. After trying a variety of unhealthy ways to reach my goals, I decided to try it the healthy way. The healthy way scared me for some reason. I knew it required discipline and patience, two things I didn’t have at the time. I decided on a nutrition and fitness program and stuck to it, and after a while I met my goals. With each workout, my passion for working out grew stronger. My reason for working out went from achieving my ideal body to ‘let’s see what my body can do.’ I wanted to help other people the same way I helped myself so I decided why not make a career out of it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were many times in the first couple of years I almost quit. Believing in yourself is scary! Not to mention, I was mortified of failure. My first five years as a trainer I always worked a second job as a safety net. Eventually, that second job got in the way of my growth because I didn’t have room on my schedule for more clients. I took a leap of faith and went all in on training.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work with a wide variety of clients. My youngest client is 14 and my oldest is 94! I really enjoy working with seniors. I love showing them what they are actually capable of. Plus, seniors aren’t scrolling on Instagram all day comparing their bodies to other people. They just wanna feel good and move without pain. It’s a good healthy goal to work with. Often times I find myself trying to talk girls out of the idea that they need to change their body. I try to motivate my clients to workout for their physical and mental health, not to achieve a body standard. I don’t seem to run into that issue with my seniors.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have a long list of coaches I idolize and try to model my training after. Kelly Starrett’s books have heavily influenced my training menthods. Other coaches I look up to include Ben Bruno, Michael Boyle and Joe DeFranco.
