Rising Stars: Meet Daryl “Scooter” Davis of Chula Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daryl “Scooter” Davis.

Hi Daryl “Scooter”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana and left for the US Navy 20 days after receiving my Highschool diploma. I served 20 years in the Navy, retired in 2013 and earned my BA and MBA then landed a job as the Network systems specialist at La Jolla Playhouse in August of 2016. I enrolled in the LJP Veterans Playwright Workshop in 2021 and I have not looked back since. In that time I have had six 10 minute plays produced through VPW and two 10 minute plays produced by The Old Globe. This all lead to me getting an opportunity to have a one hour 1 Act produced by La Jolla Playhouse in the Shank Theater in September 2024.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not a smooth road by any stretch. At 50 I am realizing that it would have been nice to understand all of the opportunities for a writer and that there was a career in it for me. I believed I had to know someone or someone had to put me on. I did not know that I could make my own way. Life itself has been the struggle but my writing is making strides I never imagined. My biggest struggle was lack of knowledge and not being introduced to playwrights who looked like me or had shared experiences.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a writer through and through. I live in the dialogue. I am known more for my photography which I have been involved in since I was 14 years old. I have shot just about everything from Prom and Homecoming to Weddings and Corporate events. I Love creating and sharing art. I spent my 20’s and 30’s and some of my 40’s as a recording artist and was able to release two albums on my own label.

I am most proud of my brand recognition and the amount of lives my art has touched. I think what sets me apart from others is the same thing that sets us all apart and that is individualism. I am the one and only me in this world.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Technology is breaking down barriers that were previously insurmountable. But now I can record, process my photos and have my scripts proof read all without having to hire someone or find someone who does that. Over the next 5 – 10 years we will see A.I. taking on more of those minor but important tasks that we would have to have tons of money to access. Artificial Intelligence is a real game changer.
