Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawne Morris.
Dawne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t start with the cannabis industry. It started with a simple frustration that kept showing up across every business I worked with. Systems didn’t connect, data didn’t tell the full story, and leadership was forced to make decisions without a clear, real-time picture of their operation.
My background has always been rooted in technology, infrastructure, and business operations. Early on, I saw that most companies weren’t failing because of bad ideas. They were failing because their systems were fragmented. That became the foundation of everything I’ve built since.
Before cannabis began to emerge as a legal industry, I recognized the same problem, just at a much higher level of risk. Operators were navigating strict compliance, rapid growth, and constant regulatory change, all while relying on disconnected tools and manual processes. In 2008, alongside my co-founder and CTO, David Morris, we launched PROTEUS420, the first true seed-to-sale ERP platform built specifically for cannabis.
There was no playbook. We were building in real time with the industry, learning state by state, and often solving problems before they were fully defined. What started as a compliance and inventory solution quickly evolved into a full ERP platform supporting cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, retail, delivery, CRM, accounting, and business intelligence. The goal was always the same: create a single source of truth that connects every part of the business.
As the industry matured, so did the needs of our clients. It became clear that software alone wasn’t enough. Businesses needed infrastructure, branding, digital presence, and scalable hosting environments that could support growth without constant breakdowns.
That’s where our ecosystem expanded.
We built PROTEUS ERP to serve not just cannabis, but other industries that face similar operational complexity. We launched PIXELED in 1997 to help businesses create modern, high-performing digital experiences that actually convert. And then a year later, we introduced Illuminated Hosting Service to ensure that the backbone of these businesses, their data, security, and uptime, was reliable and built to scale.
Each of these companies solves a different piece of the same problem, but together they create something much more powerful. Instead of businesses stitching together five or six vendors and hoping everything works, we focus on delivering a connected ecosystem where technology, infrastructure, and experience all align.
Today, my role is less about building a single product and more about shaping a vision. It’s about helping businesses understand that growth doesn’t come from adding more tools. It comes from connecting the right ones in a way that actually works.
Looking back, the journey hasn’t been linear. It’s been built through constant iteration, real-world problem solving, and staying close to the people we serve. But the mission has remained the same from day one: simplify complexity, connect the dots, and give businesses the clarity and control they need to grow with confidence.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth, not even close. And honestly, if it had been, I’d question whether we were actually solving anything meaningful.
Building in cannabis from the beginning meant stepping into an industry that didn’t have structure, stability, or support. When we launched PROTEUS420 in 2008, there were no standards, no consistent regulations, and no real acceptance from traditional financial or technology partners. We were asking people to trust a system in an industry that itself was still trying to earn trust.
One of the biggest challenges early on was credibility. We weren’t just building software; we were building confidence in something that didn’t exist yet. At the same time, we were navigating constant state-by-state regulatory changes, which meant the platform had to evolve just as quickly as the laws did. There was no “set it and forget it.” It was continuous rebuilding, refining, and adapting.
Access to banking and payment processing has also been a constant uphill battle. Cannabis businesses operate under federal restrictions, which creates ripple effects across everything from transactions to financial reporting. We’ve had to innovate around those limitations while still protecting our clients and ensuring compliance.
Then there’s the operational reality of being early. You take the hits first. You make the mistakes first. You invest time and resources into solutions that the market may not fully understand yet. There were moments where we had to make hard decisions, push through uncertainty, and stay committed even when the path forward wasn’t clear.
As we expanded from our beginning companies like PIXELED and Illuminated Hosting Service, new challenges came with that growth. Scaling responsibly, maintaining quality, building the right teams, and ensuring everything is still aligned with our core mission required a different level of discipline and leadership.
And on a personal level, being a founder means carrying a level of responsibility that doesn’t really turn off. You’re thinking about your team, your clients, your product, and the future all at once. There’s pressure in that, but there’s also purpose.
The struggles have shaped how we operate today. They’ve forced us to be resilient, to stay close to our clients, and to build with intention rather than chase trends. Nothing about this journey has been easy, but it’s exactly those challenges that made what we’ve built real, tested, and built to last.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At my core, I bring ideas to build systems that bring order to complexity, and that didn’t start with cannabis. It started decades earlier.
We launched PIXELED in 1997, at a time when most businesses didn’t yet understand the importance of having a digital presence. From there, we built Illuminated Hosting Service in 1998 to support the backend infrastructure, security, and uptime that those digital experiences required. By 2001, we introduced PROTEUS ERP, focused on solving a bigger operational challenge, how businesses manage their data, workflows, and decision-making in a unified system.
By the time we entered cannabis with PROTEUS420 in 2008, we weren’t starting from scratch. We were bringing over a decade of experience in technology, infrastructure, and business systems into an industry that needed all three, urgently.
What I specialize in is connecting the dots across a business. Not just at the software level, but across operations, compliance, finance, customer experience, and infrastructure. Most companies are still operating with disconnected tools, which creates inefficiencies and blind spots. My focus has always been on creating a single, connected environment where businesses can actually see what’s happening in real time and make decisions with confidence.
What I’m known for is building with intention and staying power. We’ve been doing this since the late ’90s, and we’ve evolved alongside every shift in technology and industry along the way. That longevity has given us a level of perspective that you can’t shortcut.
What I’m most proud of is that everything we’ve built works together as an ecosystem. Instead of forcing businesses to rely on multiple vendors that may or may not integrate well, we’ve created a structure where software, hosting, and digital presence all align. That gives our clients stability, scalability, and a level of control that’s hard to achieve otherwise.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just look at one piece of the puzzle. I look at the entire operation. I understand how decisions in one area impact everything else, and that shows up in how we build, how we support, and how we guide our clients.
At the end of the day, this isn’t about offering more services. It’s about building the right foundation so businesses can grow without constantly fighting their own systems.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Everything we’ve built, from PROTEUS420 to PROTEUS ERP, PIXELED, and Illuminated Hosting Service, is designed around fixing operational gaps, not just selling software or services. So the most productive collaborations happen when businesses are honest about where things aren’t working, whether that’s compliance, disconnected systems, scaling challenges, or even just not having clear visibility into their numbers.
For operators, working with us usually starts with a conversation and a deep dive into how their business actually runs today. From there, we identify where the breakdowns are and build a path forward that connects the pieces properly, whether that’s implementing ERP, rebuilding digital infrastructure, improving hosting and security, or aligning everything into a more cohesive system.
For partners and collaborators, there’s a lot of opportunity. We work closely with consultants, agencies, payment providers, and industry professionals who are already embedded in businesses and see the same challenges we do. If someone is aligned with the idea of building long-term, sustainable solutions and not just quick fixes, there’s room to collaborate in a meaningful way.
Support, from my perspective, is about alignment. It’s working with people who understand that this is a long game, especially in industries like cannabis where the rules are constantly evolving. It’s clients who are willing to invest in doing things the right way, and partners who want to bring real value to the table.
At the end of the day, I’m always open to conversations. Whether someone is looking to implement a full system, improve a piece of their operation, collaborate on a project, or just get clarity on what direction to take, that’s where it starts.
