Rising Stars: Meet Deborah Gama of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Gama

Hi Deborah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in music when I was 11 years old, I started playing the flute, and shortly after, I started to learn about the Bass guitar, it was then that I realized that it was the instrument I wanted to play.
In 2009, I started studying the instrument, and since then, I haven’t stopped, now 16 years later, I am still studying and performing.
I am the 2nd of 3 siblings. my family wasn’t economically strong at that time, I had to work hard to stay at school, so it was a daily challenge to be able to study and make my dream come true.

Over the years, I have worked on small projects and made videos, I tried to put myself on social networks like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, so I can have a better chance to grow in the music industry.
I started to make my self known, making videos, and it was during the pandemic when I started doing it at 100%, it was about that time when I had the opportunity to have a job recording for studios locally and then traveling with the Carnival Entretaiment company, after that I had the opportunity to work with famous musicians from different places around the world, and everything has been day by day going up and continuing my way in my music career.
At this moment, I work as an independent musician and work for studios, bands, and solo singers, recording and performing live projects.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At first, everything is like you see in other people, when you think that everything will be easy, but then after the first month of studying I realized it was not the case, not just because you had to be very dedicated to it, but because of the challenges that come in the way.
My family wasn’t economically strong, so there it was always the money factor so I can continue in the school and to have any instrument, it was always a sacrifice that has to be made, but at the end of the day it was all recompensed and all the minimal or estreme sacrifices was for the only reason of bein someone and to make my dream come true.
My instrument is not a common instrument for woman, specially the one I have now, but it’s not just that, but to have to compete with man in the way, it makes it more difficult, most of the time the critics of not being trusted on some gigs because the sole fat of being a woman, that created a barrier, that was something very difficult to get over me, but demostrating that I have the quality and the knolage of my instrument, made people change their minds about me and the hard competition against man to have gigs, that was very difficult, because I came for a very men set mentality, some people call it “macho” mentality, so it’s very difficult to be someone in this industry, so always had to do my 200% to be in other people minds to have work.
It’s difficult when you are competing with men who had more opportunities, but it was just something that I have learned, and now that is just an experience that made me who I am now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an independent musician, studio and live recording, tour musician, and influencer.
My main work is live performances and live recordings, travel doing musical clinics specially on my instrument the Bass Guitar, in the music industry people is know by many things and some of them are very specific, in my case I am know by bein the only Lating American Bass Player that plays 7 string bass and have it’s own bassline brand ( THE DG7 BASS SERIES BY DEBORAH GAMA)
At this moment, what I am most proud of is having created my very own brand and being recognized by great musicians and instrument brands that have trusted me with sponsorships and musical projects.
There are many things I can talk about myself and how I got where I am now, but it is not because of the opportunities, but my dedication and the pursuit of my dreams.
If I have to say something about what I am different of the other ones, I have to say that the only difference between me and others is that I don’t wait for opportunities to come, but I look for them, in reality there there is nothing that makes me different, the difference is symbolic, its just the mentality and how hard you want to make your dreams come true it’s what it matters.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was just a little child, I remember asking my dad to give me a real flute, specifically a tranversal flute, and it was a few months after, by my 11 year birthday, finally he gave me my first flute, it was then when I got more in love of the music, it was difficult at that time to get an instrument, but to have that in my hands, it made me so happy, for me it was better to have instruments that toys, it was not easy for us to have it but with a little sacrifice I have my first instrument, since then I took the music more serious, and then after it happened again when I got my firs bass guitar.
Things like that you can’t ever forget.
