Rising Stars: Meet Dena Meeder of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dena Meeder.

Hi Dena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as a photographer has been anything but predictable—and I wouldn’t trade a moment of it.

I started out creating portraits and transformational experiences for women, helping them rediscover themselves through contemporary glamour sessions and projects like my 40 Over 40 campaign. Those years taught me how powerful it is to feel truly seen—and how authentic images can change everything.

Before photography, I spent years working in brand strategy and marketing. That background shaped how I see visual storytelling: not just as something pretty, but as a tool to clarify your message, build credibility, and make people pay attention. So when I noticed so many entrepreneurs relying on the same tired headshots and bland stock photos—and wondering why no one was engaging—I knew there had to be a better way.

That’s what sparked this new chapter and my collaboration with Jessica Burgio. Together, we blend editorial photography, brand consulting, and creative direction to help clients build a clear, cohesive visual strategy. It’s more than creating gorgeous images—it’s about amplifying your presence and giving you the confidence to show up fully. The result? Clients walk away with powerful assets that drive connection and attract the right opportunities.

Today, my focus is helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and brands stand out in a crowded digital world. Because you can’t afford to look like everyone else. You need a vision—and the courage to be seen. That’s what we create together.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road—and honestly, that’s shaped everything about how I work today.

Early on, I struggled with feeling invisible, both personally and professionally. I’ve been in controlling environments, watched my ideas get dismissed or stolen, and felt constant pressure to fit into a mold that never felt authentic.

When I launched my photography business, there was plenty of trial and error—figuring out pricing, marketing, and how to communicate my value in an industry where everyone seems to promise “pretty pictures.” I learned that beautiful work isn’t enough if people don’t understand what makes it different or why it matters.

More recently, my biggest challenge has been navigating burnout and realizing I was ready to evolve beyond traditional portraits. Stepping into a new space—branding photography with strategy—meant letting go of old ways of working that no longer fit. It’s uncomfortable to pivot when you’ve already built something successful, but staying stuck felt even worse.

All of those experiences taught me that visibility isn’t just about showing up—it’s about owning your story, setting clear boundaries, and creating in a way that feels true to you. That’s exactly what I help my clients do today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in editorial branding photography and visual strategy for entrepreneurs and businesses ready to move beyond generic content. My work blends creative direction, styling, and guided posing to create images that don’t just look good—they drive connection and momentum.

What I’m most proud of is helping clients see themselves in a new way. Whether it’s a founder launching a rebrand or a creative stepping into more visibility, it’s incredible to watch that transformation unfold.

The truth is, you can have the best product or service in your industry, but if your visuals look like everyone else’s, it’s easy to get overlooked. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all sessions. Through my collaboration with Jessica Burgio, we combine photography, brand consulting, and strategic planning so you walk away with a complete visual toolkit that feels aligned, polished, and unmistakably yours.

If you’re tired of blending in and ready for images that feel elevated, authentic, and impossible to scroll past, that’s exactly what I’m here to create.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck has played a role, but it’s often looked like disguised challenges instead of obvious breaks. The “bad luck”—like losing jobs, outgrowing spaces, or having ideas overlooked—pushed me to build something on my own terms. Those experiences forced me to get clear about what I stood for and who I really wanted to serve.

On the flip side, I’ve definitely had moments of good timing—like connecting with collaborators who shared my vision or being featured in publications that helped me reach a bigger audience. But even those moments only mattered because I was willing to take risks and keep evolving.

At the end of the day, I believe luck will open a door, but it’s your responsibility to walk through it—and build something worth staying for.
