Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Payan.
Hi Elise, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was younger I always loved creating and doing anything that related to art. Drawing, painting, sculpting.. you name it! I wanted to make sure that I never lost that passion and would tell myself that no matter what I did career wise I just want to do something that challenges my creativity. Out of high school I started my first job at my neighborhood Baskin Robbins where I was then introduced to the fun world of cake decorating! As time went on and I became more experienced I knew that this was something I was very much interested in. An art form that you can enjoy and eat! Since then I’ve enjoyed having the privilege to grow both working in local bakeries and taking culinary classes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My art and culinary journey has definitely been both a fun and challenging adventure. I wouldn’t wish for an easy road because I’ve been able to see myself grow everyday. I am constantly learning new things and that’s what makes it all so exciting! I’ve been able to learn how to do things I could have never imagined being able to do. I remember growing up being told that there aren’t real artistic jobs in the work world. Yet being in the culinary industry, I’m surrounded by talented artist’s everyday! If you love what you do and you are passionate for it you really can do what you love! I’m so very grateful for every closed door and an opened opportunity that has helped me to be where I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently have a homebaker side-hustle for custom cake designs. I love getting to work with clients about their ideas for a design and how I can make their special event even more special! I’m known for my vintage piped heart shaped cakes and for having an interest in making hyper-realistic cakes. I also enjoy making small TikTok videos of my work and just having fun! One thing I’m most proud of since starting this journey is participating in the Del Mar Fair’s competitive exhibits. I’ve entered decorated cakes the past 2 years now and received 1st place ribbons both years! Each year I get to see how far my skills have come and for that I’m the most proud of. What sets me apart is that I love a challenge. I try to be as accommodating as I can with people’s ideas and I’m not afraid to try new designs!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always and still am very introverted. I would be in my room a lot as a kid just drawing while listing to music. I played a lot of sports when I was younger too. Probably where I learned that I liked to be competitive and challenged. Much like art, sports helped me to relax and disconnect from the world. I’ve always loved having time to have fun, create, and allow my brain to decompress. I’m always thinking of new projects so it’s best to capture my ideas the moment I think of them. My family is also a very big reason for the person I am today. They always pushed me to pursue my passions and were always there to support me in my artistic journey. My creativity is very much apart of who I am and having the freedom to express myself has been something I’ve been very blessed for.
