Rising Stars: Meet Frank Floyd of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Floyd.

Hi Frank, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So my name is Frank Floyd but my IMDB and name I’m under for publications is Frankie Floyd. Born and raised in San Diego, CA. I became an official screenwriter in 2010 but before that I was already logging jokes and other scenarios just to explore narratives (and obviously to laugh.) I had a few agents reach out and had one for a while but when that ship led to nowhere I decided to pursue a degree in film. I was already an optioned and produced screenwriter at this time but felt I needed to take more control of a sustainable future worth living.

I started training at Eastlake Muay Thai with The Gallegos Jiu Jitsu HQ. The gym I’m a part of has a huge role in giving back to the community. Through its non-profit, it provides counseling, mentoring, training, etc. to people with trauma. Being able to train with and experience people’s journey through the darkest of times helped me develop a deeper understanding of what it means to have purpose. Having lost people close to me through similar situations, I felt these stories could help a lot of people going through difficult times. With our gym and its participating members permission, we started producing, “Healing Heart’s,” a series of mini-doc’s with its scope aimed at first person accounts of how the gym affected their lives. This series led me to several performance based scholarships at Southwestern College and UCSD.

My true love has always been in sports. While getting my Bachelor’s in media, I found myself working for the Prep Pigskin Report as well as the UCSD Athletic Department’s Production and Creative Team. These were probably the most fulfilling years of my life thus far. I enjoyed every second of it.

There is an ironic twist to me attending UCSD I forgot to mention. A friend who is like a brother to me (and UCSD alum) is the only reason why I applied. It was supposed to be a joke since I assumed UCSD only accepted smart people and “I wasn’t the sharpest tool in the toolbox.” I’m kind of known as the guy who doesn’t take anything seriously and said I was too dumb to ever attend that school. I was a bit surprised when I got my acceptance letter with an offer for a very lucrative scholarship, thanks Ernesto. It was with Ernesto and a few other childhood buddies that I helped launch BLK Box Gallery and Creative Center. My direction has taken me elsewhere but BLK Box is now a staple in its community and it’s pretty cool I was one of the original founders. It’s now a hub for people to try and achieve goals once thought unattainable where we were from.

In the present day, I find my most fulfilling purpose in youth leadership and coaching. I currently teach P.E. for homeschool students as well as coach at a local school. I still do media work for our gym and work for KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report. The CEO and founder of our gym, Professor Elias Gallegos, and I organize speaking engagements for some of the schools I’ve worked at. As a leadership expert and motivational speaker, he speaks to our kids about several topics such as purpose and character.

I’m still working in media and have incorporated it into the sports I coach. Some of the athletes I’ve had the pleasure of coaching are now in high school and I try to give them resources to take their passion to the next level. I make them highlight videos, give them college pathways that a pro athlete I work with used to make it, and whatever else they may need (that’s legal!) to get a foot in the door. Our aim is to further their education and use their love of sport to help shape the rest of their lives.

My primary goal is for whomever I come across to learn and be guided towards a path to a life worth living through their passion. As Professor Elias would say, “Your passion will lead to your purpose.” I try to encourage and reinforce this premise in hopes our kids don’t lose their true purpose like a lot of us have in our lives.

Oh yeah, I was bored and wrote a comedy book inspired by the book, “Sh*t My Dad Says.” It’s called “Am I Wrong.” It’s pretty funny and I’d like to turn it into a series so I’m still saving jokes for it. It’s somewhere on Kindle. I don’t even know how to buy it. It is hilarious though. LOL

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I was a lost person after I lost touch with sports (in my late teens, early 20’s, I’m like 40 or something now.) I diluted my sense of purpose in all the wrong things. This led to years of people making things happen through me and not with me. The community I was in drained the life out of me. If it wasn’t for my parents and eventually, the gym keeping me level headed mentally, I’m afraid I would’ve became what the world was trying to make me, not who I really am. The writing and making jokes kept me going but once I got with our gym, everything else started falling into the right places.

I got accepted to The U (University of Miami) Graduate Film school and got to see the campus. This was surreal since it was one of my favorite college football programs growing up. I was offered a scholarship that only 3% of people get (although it still would’ve been nearly $90,000 a year for 3 years to attend, yeah that kinda hurt, maybe in my 20’s I would’ve stayed a Hurricane.) Unfortunately, I rescinded the once in a lifetime opportunity and had to start from square one again. Oh well, at least an iguana didn’t fall on my head. I thought they were all over the campus as like pets. Come to find out they’re like stray dogs and bite. Anyways, I left Miami and went home and everything I was working towards got reset. It was pretty disappointing since I had great things lined up career and home wise before I left. It’s all good. Such is life. I got with a company after a job search that took way too long and it’s pretty fulfilling. The position was coaching P.E. for homeschool kids. I was also able to return to a school for my leadership position and coach competitive sports.

It’s still not a smooth road since we are in California but I find purpose in helping the kids and their families achieve goals, develop visions, and work towards an integrity filled life worth living. Money can’t really buy that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a filmmaker with degrees in both media and marketing. My experience and career scope are as a: photographer/digital media creator, produced and optioned screenwriter, youth leader, and coach.

When it comes to media and marketing, I’ve made and covered just about everything you can think of. I’ve made short films, done weddings, quince’s, sports photography, doc work, events, led marketing campaigns, etc. I like to focus on sports and sports related things but am open to all things creative so long as it aligns with my values. As a screenwriter, I’ve worked with Christian Dalton (International Theatre turned screen actor with credits in Netflix’s Godless,) Cesar DeLaTorre (Angry Neighbors, Ground Floor,) Idalis DeLeon (MTV, Burn Notice, Six Feet Under.) I’ve optioned and sold a feature comedy that’s pretty cool. The director asked me to sign an NDA and not speak about what they were doing. I have no idea what an NDA is. They also sent me a notarized contract asking me not to speak about its premise and other details of the project or it could nullify the monetary stuff. I don’t know why it’s supposed to be a secret, but if you reach out to him, maybe he can tell you. His name is…… Just joking. LOL.

I work in sports broadcasting during the prep football season for KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report still. I love this job too. Love the community, love everything about it. If you have any stories from the community, reach out and I’ll try to make a piece for you.

I am also a coach and youth leader at a local junior high school as well as coach P.E for homeschool kids. We have given a number of kids scholarships to Gallegos Jiu Jitsu HQ. Professor Chris Richie of National City Jiu Jitsu Club was nice enough to also lend a hand and give one of the kids I coached a scholarship to his academy. If you’re a local to National City and looking for a place to train, hit him up. He runs the King of the City events which are gaining a lot of traction.

A while ago, I became a published author. I wrote a biopic available at Barnes and Noble “Broken Pieces, The Matthew Taylor Story” which I wrote for a prominent church leader in Moreno Valley. It has an attached script that made it to the later rounds of a competitive screenplay competition. I won a few of those in different genres across the board as well.

I’m most proud of the positive impact I can have on the youth. Whether it is in sports accomplishments, a sense of purpose, discovering a passion for something, keeping them out of trouble, etc….. As long as I make a good impact on their lives and they don’t make the same unhealthy decisions I made when I was younger, I can live or die knowing I made something good in this world for someone.

I try not to think of “setting myself apart from others.” There’s only one-of-one of you, you can’t base your life on whatever someone else is doing. That’s a cowards way of life and an excuse that a lot of people get in a lot of trouble for. If a person is genuine, their authenticity of that trait will always differ from everyone. Otherwise it’ll always be the same story, just a different mask of a person.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
There’s a lot of them and I learn a new one every day. It’s learning from what I learn that’s the hard part LOL. Hopefully we all learn today.

This is always a good one, “If you don’t know who you are, the world is going to tell or show you who you are.” -Professor Elias Gallegos

Here’s one from my dad (he’s white, Irish white):
“Welp! You can BS a BS’er but you can’t snow the snowman.” Not gonna lie, I still don’t know what that means but whenever he says “Welp!” it’s always hilarious.

Here’s one from my mom (she’s Filipina, like, islander Filipina):
“Don’t be estupido!” To this day she always tells me and my buddies that. Have no idea why.

Here’s another good one.
“When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.” His holiness the Dalai Lama …… just joking, I got it from Dave Chappelle. LOL

Main one is, just laugh. Life is funner that way.

…… and, hey, hey, hey, hey……
Romans 8:28 everyday …… LOL

Thank you all. Hope it wasn’t too boring and you laughed at least once.
