Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Goering.
Hannah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started in 7th grade when I got the “Most Improved” award in my art class. Fast forward about 10 years, I decide to go to college for Art Education. It was there where I was introduced to an oil painting class – that was the first time I painted for real. I initially started using oil paint to create abstractions, play with colors, and experiment (I truly had no idea what I was doing so it was an experiment every time I picked up a paintbrush). After graduating, I had random commissioned paintings for family and friends…then more, then more, then more. My only way of getting my art out there was through Instagram or word of mouth until I started participating in various art walks, pop-ups, and makers markets in the spring of 2022. I am so lucky to have found a group of San Diego artists who encourage me, inspire me, and vibe with me. Every day I am grateful for the encouragement and inspiration from my art pals!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yeah, all in all, it’s been a halfway smooth road. I have definitely learned a lot along the way. Yes, there have been markets where I have sold no paintings at all, spent so much money to participate, and then went home feeling like I really don’t have a clue what I’m doing. However, my favorite quote is, “The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.” I made the decision to continue to pursue art and the universe worked around it.
Simply put, go with the flow, be confident in your choices, and it’ll work out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create with many different mediums. I started as a photographer in high school, then transformed into painting in college and now I’m diving into the digital arts world – mixing photography and painting together as one. I am most proud of my ability to create bright, colorful works of art in difficult times. Some of my most vibrant and lively paintings come from a time of deep emotion or transformation in my life. I believe that my art is different from most because I love using COLOR! I use only colors I love, and I’m not afraid to continually add more colors until the piece is completed.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
This is my favorite question because I had so so so much help along the way, and I’ll forever be gracious for fellow artists that got me to where I am today.
My advice is to experiment with your audience, try different markets, and see who your clients might be. Some art markets might be great for you and others might be the worst day ever. But try them out because you never know until you try.
Try out different techniques; which one works best for you? Which medium is your favorite? What do you love the most? What type of creating gets you out of bed in the morning? What type of art gets you all giddy? There is no right or wrong with creating art – so just start!
Something to know if you are just starting out as a creative – it will be so rewarding at times and completely heartbreaking in others, but it’s worth it. 🙂
