Rising Stars: Meet Haydee Yanez of South Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haydee Yanez.

Haydee Yanez

Hi Haydee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hola! I’m Haydee Yanez, a native Cora from Tepic, Nayarit, and I grew up in the vibrant border town of Tijuana, México. My journey in design began with my college thesis at Universidad Iberoamericana, where I started MexiconsArt as a project to celebrate and share my admiration for unique Mexican icons through a simple coloring book for kindergartners.

With over 20 years of experience in Art Direction, Illustration, Publishing, and Consumer Products, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of bilingual content, from hospitality materials to children’s books. Today, I reside in Southern California with my beloved canhija, Friducha, and continue to develop paper goods, accessories, and apparel through MexiconsArt, blending nostalgia with a deep love for México.

¡Bienvenidos! I’m excited to share my passion for Mexican culture and design with you.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

It hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the significant challenges I faced was emigrating to a new place without family members nearby. The longing for community and the desire to find my tribe played a crucial role in pushing me to create MexiconsArt. Starting a new chapter in a different country brought its own set of hurdles, but it also fueled my passion to connect with others who share my love for Mexican culture. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and it’s been the support and connection with like-minded individuals that has made it all worthwhile.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My profession is graphic design, a field that has been both challenging and dynamic, constantly evolving with the fast pace of technology. What sets me apart is my focus on blending nostalgia with contemporary design. This unique approach allows me to connect deeply with my audience, especially through my cultural coloring books, which resonate with multigenerational families.

In addition to my work with MexiconsArt, where I specialize in creating paper goods, accessories, and apparel infused with Mexican cultural icons, I also work in children’s publishing, gifting, and stationery. I take pride in how my work bridges generations and fosters a sense of shared cultural heritage, making the intangible feeling of nostalgia a central element in my designs.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m an avid reader, a passion deeply influenced by my grandfather, who instilled in me a love for vintage and classic literature. Books are a significant part of my life, especially in the genres of memoirs, biographies, self-help, and business. One book I highly recommend is Self-Made by Nely Galan—it’s an inspiring read.

In addition to reading, I’m a strong advocate for therapy and exercise. These practices help me stay grounded and provide the tools I need to translate my ideas from words into action. They’re essential for maintaining both my personal well-being and professional creativity.
