Rising Stars: Meet Humberto Gurmilan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Humberto Gurmilan

Hi Humberto, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Humberto, but my friends and family call me “Beto.” At the age of 15, I suffered a devastating spinal cord injury practicing my favorite sport, surfing. But, with the love and support from my family and friends and a lot of faith I was able to overcome the tragedy and accomplish my dreams. Today, I am an Emmy award-winning Journalist and Producer with 15 years of experience in the media as a sports reporter and anchor. I am the Director and founder of The Gurmilan Foundation and currently teach Public Relations and Communication at Southern New Hampshire University. My life mission is to help others by sharing my experiences and inspiring to live with courage. I previously had the honor of serving as Press Secretary for Chairwoman Nora Vargas, Supervisor in San Diego County, and today, I am a Communications Manager for a utility company here in Southern California, where I lead all communication efforts related to sustainability and innovation. I am also an accomplished speaker focused on spreading a message of hope and perseverance.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My spinal cord injury presented ongoing physical challenges that I had to navigate, such as mobility issues and adapting to a new way of living. Coping with a life-altering injury at a young age undoubtedly caused emotional turmoil. I have faced feelings of grief, anger, or frustration as a young person adapting to my new reality and grappled with the loss of my ability to participate in your favorite sport and activities.

Pursuing a career in journalism and media, particularly in roles such as a sports reporter and anchor, presented unique challenges due to my physical disability. I encountered skepticism and discrimination from employers or colleagues, requiring me to prove my capabilities and overcome stereotypes.

But as a public speaker focused on spreading a message of hope and perseverance, I have faced pressure to remain positive and inspiring, even during moments of personal struggle or doubt. This has required vulnerability and authenticity while also managing the expectations of my audience.

Despite these struggles, my resilience, determination, and support system have enabled me to achieve remarkable success and make a significant impact in my community.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in communications, particularly in the fields of journalism, public relations, and media relations. Throughout my career, I’ve garnered extensive experience as a sports reporter, anchor, and journalist. I am now delve in the field of public relations and thoroughly enjoy it. Additionally, I’ve served in roles such as press secretary for chairwoman Nora Vargas and supervisor in San Diego County. Currently, I lead communication efforts related to sustainability and innovation as a communications manager for a utility company in Southern California.

One of the endeavors I’m most proud of is founding and directing The Gurmilan Foundation, where I work to support and inspire others facing challenges similar to those I’ve overcome. Through this foundation, I’ve been able to share my experiences and spread a message of hope and perseverance, making a tangible difference in the lives of others.

What sets me apart from others is my unique journey and perspective. Despite facing a devastating spinal cord injury at a young age, I’ve persevered to achieve success in multiple fields, leveraging my experiences to make a positive impact in both my professional career and community involvement. My dedication to sharing my story and helping others navigate adversity sets me apart and drives my mission to inspire courage and resilience in others.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was adventurous and passionate, with a deep love for sports and outdoor activities. Surfing was not just a hobby for me; it was a way of life. I thrived on the adrenaline rush of catching waves and exploring the ocean. This love for adventure and the outdoors shaped my personality, instilling in me a sense of fearlessness and determination.

I was also deeply sociable and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Whether it was hanging out at the beach, playing sports, or simply sharing stories and laughter, I cherished moments of connection and camaraderie.

Beyond sports, I had a curious mind and a love for storytelling. I was drawn to the world of media and journalism from a young age, fascinated by the power of words and images to inform and inspire. This passion for storytelling eventually led me to pursue a career in journalism and communications, where I could combine my love for sports with my desire to share meaningful stories with others.

Despite the challenges I faced growing up, including the life-altering spinal cord injury, I remained resilient and optimistic. My experiences taught me the importance of perseverance and gratitude, shaping me into the person I am today: someone who is driven by a sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact in the world.
