Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Perovich of Scripps Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Perovich.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been drawn to creativity. In high school and college I had some amazing art teachers who really inspired me. They didn’t just teach technique, they showed me how art can bring people together and help you express what words can’t. That really shaped me.

A few years ago I was part of an artist co-op in Carlsbad called The Foundry. I spent about three years there surrounded by creative people who pushed me and inspired me every day. When that chapter ended, I knew I wanted to keep that feeling alive.

That’s where ArtLabs came from. I wanted to build a place that felt like that same community, somewhere people could create, grow, and reconnect with their creative side. It’s about giving people the space and encouragement to spark something again. I started small, renting a single suite at Scripps Ranch Office Suites and hosting workshops, art nights, and kids’ classes. What began as me just wanting a place to paint slowly turned into a living, breathing creative co-op. Now it’s a mix of memberships, workshops, and open studio sessions, all centered on connection, encouragement, and that spark that happens when someone rediscovers their creative voice.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting something from scratch always comes with challenges. There were moments I doubted if it would all come together, especially balancing my full-time work, family, and trying to build this dream on the side. Finding the right space, the right rhythm, and just trusting the process took time.

There’s also that quiet fear every creative person has, wondering if people will actually show up, if what you’re building really matters. But every time someone walks in and says they haven’t painted in years and then leaves glowing because they did… that reminds me why I kept going. The struggles made it more meaningful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a visual artist and designer, and I’ve always loved working across different mediums. Painting is my first love, but I also work in photography, digital art, and graphic design. I’m also in marketing, which gives me a different way to tell stories and connect creativity with purpose.

I think what I’m most known for is using color and emotion to bring life to my work. Whether it’s a painting or a design project, I want it to make people feel something.

Through ArtLabs, I’ve been able to share that passion in a bigger way. It’s not just about my own art anymore, it’s about helping others find their voice creatively. Watching someone light up when they create something they didn’t think they could is one of my favorite things.

What I’m most proud of is building a space that inspires creativity in others. What sets me apart is that I don’t just want to make art or teach it, I want to create an environment where people remember why they loved it in the first place.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor can feel intimidating, but I’ve learned it often starts with just showing up. Go to local events, workshops, or art shows and start conversations with people. Most of the best connections I’ve made came from being curious and open, not from forcing anything.

I also think mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. Some of the people who’ve shaped me most probably don’t even realize they were mentoring me. Sometimes it’s an artist who shares a small piece of advice, or someone who simply believes in what you’re doing.

What’s worked best for me is staying genuine and helping others without expecting anything in return. When you focus on building real relationships instead of trying to “network,” you end up finding the right people who lift you up and challenge you to grow.
