Rising Stars: Meet Jessy Segovia of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Segovia.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing when I was 3 years old. I used to draw stories and narrate them to my family, or honestly any person that was near. It was until I turned 13 that I wrote my first novel about Death. In highschool, I had the chance to work with my mom for her non-profit healthcare organization, and I learned the stories of homeless people. I published my first book at 17. Right after that, I rewrote my first novel and published it at 18. Now, I have 2 poetry books, and a mystery novel as well.
In 2024, I started working as a screenwriter for Odissea Films.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Publishing companies charge high fees for authors. Growing up, I didn’t have the resources to even consider being a published author. However, I was able to find free resources that helped me get to where I am today.
Also, after highschool, I had to put a pause on my dream to work 2 jobs and get me through college. Nevertheless, I wrote poetry on the back of receipts, spare sheets, or anything I could find.
Now that I am out of college, I am able to continue pursuing creative writing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I professionally work as an Executive Assistant for an engineering company. However, I am also working as a screenwriter for Odissea Films. I am part of the writers room that comes up with ideas, concepts, and scripts for film productions. Since I have an engineering major, I have also worked with vfx in set. I am most proud of being able to talk to people that have read my stories. One of the most remarkable opinions I have heard was from a set designer. She told me that as soon as the script is finished, my words are not mine anymore, but they are owned by whoever reads and interprets them. I believe that I stand out as a writer because I always choose stories that feel true to me. I write poetry to understand my emotions, I write short stories to narrate adventures, and novels to convey bigger ideas. Scriptwriting is a mixture of everything because you are able to see, feel, hear, and even touch a story that becomes real.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was an odd kid. While my peers were interested in pop culture, I loved reading Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe, Frankenstein. I was absolved in books, playing the violin, and imagining stories to write about. I was known as a writer all my life.
I did great in school, but most of my years were clouded by anxiety. However, I was never a shy kid. I was loud when injustices were being allowed. That’s why my books always convey a social message.
