Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Wirkkala.
Hi Jim, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My journey to becoming a real estate agent has been full of twists and turns, challenges and opportunities, and a lot of learning and growth. I was born and raised in Ilwaco, WA, a small coastal town where I enjoyed a simple and happy childhood. I graduated from high school in 1991 and joined the Navy in 1992, where I served my country for two years on active duty and six years in the reserves. This experience taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience, which have been valuable skills throughout my life.
After leaving the Navy, I entered the hospitality industry and worked as a bartender and manager for 27 years. I had the privilege of working for some of the finest restaurants in Southern California, such as Il Forniao, Epazote in Del Mar, and Vigiluccis Cucina in the Village of Carlsbad. I loved interacting with customers, creating memorable experiences, and developing lasting relationships. However, I also felt that I wanted to do something more meaningful and fulfilling with my life. I wanted to help people achieve their dreams of homeownership and create wealth through real estate.
I started studying for the real estate exam in 2020, while still working as a bartender. I also worked as an assistant to some experienced agents to gain hands-on knowledge and insights into the industry. Unfortunately, the covid pandemic disrupted my plans and forced me to delay taking the exam until May 2021. But I did not give up on my goal. I studied hard and passed the exam with flying colors. I then decided to quit my bartending job and focus on real estate full-time. I joined the Coldwell Banker Realty team, based in the Vista Office in North County, San Diego, where I have been working ever since.
I am passionate about real estate and committed to providing excellent service to my clients. I listen to their needs, guide them through the process, and negotiate the best deals for them. I also leverage my extensive network of contacts in the hospitality industry to generate leads and referrals. I am always eager to learn new skills and stay updated on the latest market trends and technologies. I am proud to be part of a reputable and supportive company that shares my values and vision.
My personal life is also very rewarding. I have a wonderful wife and a beautiful son, who are my biggest supporters and motivators. We live in Vista, CA, where we enjoy the beach lifestyle and the diverse culture. We also love traveling, hiking, camping, and spending quality time together.
I am grateful for everything that has led me to where I am today. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. I look forward to helping more people find their ideal homes and achieve their real estate goals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As you may recall, the pandemic delayed my exam schedule by one year. This had a significant impact on my career prospects, especially in 2023, when the real estate market was very unfavorable. However, I was able to leverage my skills and experience in the service industry, which helped me to communicate effectively and build rapport with different clients and investors.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up in a small town gave me a lot of opportunities to enjoy myself and explore my surroundings. I cherished the moments when I could roam around with my friends, creating our own adventures and games. We would construct makeshift shelters, cycle and skate through the streets, and return home only when it was dark. I also developed a passion for sports, joining various teams in high school, such as basketball, football, golf, and track. I learned valuable skills and lessons from these activities, such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
