Rising Stars: Meet Joey Brabo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Brabo.

Joey Brabo

Hi Joey, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I joined Respect My Region in 2011 during college and began coordinating events and helping to host concerts and parties at different universities. I moved to Houston in 2012-2013, going to school at University of Houston and promoting concerts with Nightculture and Scoremore. I moved back to Seattle in 2013 and began volunteering at music festivals and covering events as a music blog. 2014-2016 I went back to school and graduated in 2015 and then joined Microsoft as a presentation specialist working on AR/VR with the Hololens team.

Joined cannabis in 2016 via Leafly and a dispensary for two different jobs. Launched a marketing agency in 2017, writing blogs and running social media for dispensaries in Washington State.

Wrote and edited 2000+ articles from 2017-2019 and moved to Los Angeles in February 2019 after a video went viral on Christmas Day 2018. We grew 45,000 likes on Facebook, and I got a job selling cannabis for Buddies Brand. I worked for them for 3 years and opened up more than 60 dispensary partner locations before joining The Cure Company and selling Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon OG products.

In 2022 we launched Respect My Region cannabis products in California and Washington State and launched 16 different podcast series on the RMR Podcast Network. I currently oversee the Respect My Region blog content social media and recruit all of our staff and team members.

RMR is working on licensing deals for cannabis products in Arizona, New York, Massachusetts, Montana, Missouri, New Mexico, and Illinois.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I have had money stolen, equipment stolen, and clients stolen. We have battled through the rise of Covid, the Russian and Ukraine War, and the American economy crashing/inflating at incredible levels.

The internet also continues to change due to legislation surrounding TikTok, cannabis, and fake news.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create curate, coordinate, and craft content in the realms of music, cannabis, and culture. I am blessed to cover music festivals, concerts, private listening parties and to work with music artists from all places. In cannabis, we showcase products, events, brands, entrepreneurs and provide a platform to those doing inspiring work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Being in the right place at the right time has allowed me to execute a mindset of staying ready so I don’t have to get ready. We work hard to prepare for luck to hit us when we think luck has a chance to play a role. The point is to put yourself in positions where magic can happen and improve the likelihood of success by being in as many of those settings as possible.
