Rising Stars: Meet Jordae One of University Heights, San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordae One.

Hi Jordae, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
i grew up doing art from a young age, eventually experimenting all different kinds of mediums. in my twenties i started traveling the world and landed firmly on doing acrylic portrait painting and have stuck to it ever since. i’ve always been into tattoos, doing some on myself as early as 11 years old, and then getting more substantial work at 17. throughout the years i played around with tattooing on myself and friends but i was still focused on acrylics. but at the age of 36 i decided to do an apprenticeship with a friend of mine who owned a tattoo shop in san diego. after a year of learning i moved around shops and did a lot of traveling, exploring the world of tattooing more professionally. i fell in love with it. been tattooing 10 years this year. and i still work on acrylic portrait projects when i have the time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
for me, the life of an artist has been rewarding and satisfying to my soul, but a smooth road it was not. it takes courage and discipline and years of exploration, often times without much compensation. but i did whatever i could to travel and paint, trading art projects for places to stay or working with friends on projects to make ends meet. i’ve been doing art now for about 35 years, professionally for about 20 years, tattooing for about 10, and just now feel like i am finding my rhythm in all of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
i paint photo-realism portraits and make tattoos, both of these professionally. in tattooing i focus on making clean, crisp and bold imagery, but i don’t have any particular style per se, more that i do all types of styles, as long as i can make it a nice tattoo.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
having spent most of my life traveling or transient, san diego is the closest to a home town that i have. i love the weather, the geography, the spaciousness, and the food, but i mostly like that i am so familiar with this city.
